YHA Weekend Rides

Just putting the thought out there to discuss.

But years ago YHA weekends were quite a normal occurrence once or twice a year. So just wondering if there is any mileage in considering doing another one or two?

Cap the one way out mileage to about a 100 mile radius and keep the group down to a small compact group, say six?

Brecon Beacons is one YHA that Ive looked at, which is right (maybe a whisker over) on that capped limit. But there are quite a few to choose from, thoughts?

Sounds like a cracking idea to me. 100 miles sounds about right, we had quite a few doing a century a couple of weeks ago.

I'd certainly be happy with a hostel and Brecon Beacons is easy to get to and not as lumpy as it sounds.

We did a lot of hostelling in the 1950's.
Norman Adams led ten of us on a hostel tour of Southern Ireland in 1954, starting in Cork and finishing in Dublin. Other notable occasions were the Bonfire run to Welsh Bicknor and a New Years Eve celebration at Stow on the Wold. Most of the hostelling was in the winter, outside the racing season and we often turned out en masse

Great fun.

A lot of beer was consumed.

I really like this idea. Good ride, good company, comfortable bed, beer. Possibly rain but I’m over that now.

As indicated elsewhere, I'm interested provided that the timing works out for me. I have very little scope for another weekend away this summer, for example. I think that the social element is a key part of making a cycling weekend enjoyable, so if we're hostelling I would definitely prefer a hostel that's close enough to civilisation to enable us to walk to a pub in the evening.

Just putting this idea back on people's radar.

This coming May will see me retire and l really want to go exploring and see a bit more of the UK, which before Woody says anything, does not include camping!!

As well as the YHA (or stopping in a pub) weekend, how about taking a train out to somewhere and ride back either the same day or the next day?

As indicated before, I'm interested in principle, Alan, but it'll all depend on specifics of timing and so on. I've got the period 18 to 21 May earmarked for a mini tour myself, but have yet to select a destination or make any proper plans. Depending on what you decide, there might be scope for linking up.

To be honest George, come 1st May l'm a free agent, so l can fit in to suit anyone that may not be in the same position.

Just having a quick look around at YHA's with a 100 mile radius of the Black Horse.

The Peak District has a good selection of options, ranging from around 70 to 100 miles.

It would be ideal if we could get enough people interested so that we could book a dorm just for us?

I'd be interested, though George's dates don't suit me as I'm planning on doing my own short tour further afield.
