Draft 2012 Handicap Tables

From Brian Botfield & Simon Dighton....

Draft handicap tables have been prepared and are just being finally reviewed. However thought it would be useful to show the handicaps which are listed in date order. Please let Simon Dighton and Brian Botfield know of any mistakes on the attached and we will get corrected (differences of opinion won’t be – sorry!). A brief description of the spreadsheet is that the first tab shows, in date order, the handicap time by person for each time trial. The second tab is the expected time for each time trial. The handicap is then deducted from the actual time to give the handicap time for that time trial. A summary of the handicap rules is as follows;

The best way to explain the main principle in putting together the handicap tables is by an example. Each handicap course has a standard time assigned to it – typically a time that is quicker than any club member could hope to achieve. On a 10 mile TT course this could be 20 minutes. If your personal best on that course, based on results in the last three years, is 25 minutes than your handicap time is 5 minutes (25-20). 5 minutes will therefore be deducted from your next actual time to give your handicap time for that event.

Complications arise where a member does not have a time for a particular course. If they have ridden almost no time trials they receive a standard handicap (which is shown in the rules) and cannot achieve a handicap time better than standard. If they have ridden some time trials then a handicap time will be estimated for them based on rides on similar courses and / or comparisons with other riders of similar strength. There are also, relatively minor, adjustments for age as one would expect actual times to gradually lengthen as one gets older. After a new member (or one returning to time trials) has ridden 4 events the handicaps will be reassessed for future events.
