Brompton World Championships 2012

Post by Andy Terry » 19 Aug 2012 20:32

Fresh from the 'Clee to heaven' audax, I took my trusty Brompton* down to Blenheim Palace for the Brompton World Championships - one of the events organised as part of the Bike Blenheim Palace weekend.

"750 participants take to the track to battle for the title of Brompton World Champion; the field is made up of competitors from 36 nations. The Brompton World Championship is not a mass participation ride, it is a race. After a Le Mans style start, participants will be timed over 2 laps of the 6.5km course through the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Palace. The race attracts the full spectrum of riders, from those who have only recently got into cycling to those who are part of the cycling elite. Professional or not, a strict dress code is enforced**; Lycra™ will not be tolerated and jacket, collar and neck tie are expected of all."

All I can say is that the race itself was a frenetic, tough and slighty scary 30 minutes of riding. The overall Blenheim event had a great atmosphere - not just because of the 'Bromptoneers' - there were lots of other rides and activities going on and plenty of stands etc. to look at

We are waiting for the results to be published so I can find out how I got on. There seemed to be lots of camera crews and press, so I'd expect footage to appear on Youtube and possibly the telly soon.

**Due to the high temperatures today, the race organiser allowed the riders to dispense with jackets.

Must have been great to have participated. Pity about the jackets. I was hoping that we could have an official Beacon red white and green striped blazer approved by EGM for next year with matching bow tie!! Well done Terry for flying the Beacon flag in a race against Hutch and other quality riders

Crumbs, that spot of training you did on Saturday did the trick - well done!

BWC 2013 will take place at Goodwood Motor Circuit. So 2012 will probably remain my one and only effort.

Moved on safety grounds I guess - it was a bit scary all us non-racers racing round the narrow roads at Blenheim.
