For anybody who's read (or experienced) the history of the LMTT or watched the DVD...

How sad. 'The Boot' was a legend, even while he was still riding. As the article says, his sub-4hr ride was achieved on 84" fixed, although I seem to recollect that he used a Sturmey Archer 3 or 4 speed fixed hub gear for the RRA record. I cant remember that he was ever beaten over 100 miles and the margin of his victories was astonishing. He was, of course, a winner of our Mountain Time Trial, not the LMTT, but the original 62 mile version. At that time we organised a Ladies '10' which preceded the MTT, and that year it was won by the equally legendary Beryl Burton. I remember that 'Cycling' magazine gave us a full double page spread under the headline 'Burton Booty
Beacon Brilliance.

'The Boot' though, wasn't just a racing man, he was a proper cyclist, a real clubman.
It is better to be interesting rather than exact

As Alan indicates, he was a legend of his time and is still well known today. Considering his connection to our Club's events of the past, perhaps a card of condolence would be in order?

Indeed a true legend and he came across as remarkably modest man considering the stature of his achievments.
