Woolly Mamil Winter Series, Stourport

Post by laurence_cooley » 08 Oct 2013 12:22

Anyone who is raring to go for 2014 might be interested to hear that there's going to be a winter series of four circuit races in January/early February at Stourport. Each of the four dates includes women's only, youth, E123 and 4th cat races. Details here.

Well done Stuart.

Did any other Beaconites take part?

Well done to Stuart for adding a win today to last week's third place (in his first ever race).

Simon Dighton and I did last week, and this week Tim and I raced in the 4th-cat race and Richard (sporting an impressive new retro saddle and haircut combination) in the E123s.

Stuart absolutely dominated the 4th cat ride today. To be on the front for 50% and in front 3 for rest of time and then win the sprint is good going! 2nd Cat by July? and did it on a Trek!

Report from round 3. Hopefully there will be better conditions on Saturday for anyone racing. I can't make it.

http://www.velouk.net/2014/02/05/result ... uit-races/

I watched some of Stuart's 1/2/3 race and he looked strong early on spending some time on the front of the main group but the pack soon split into loads of small groups as the pace increased in the strong winds.

I finished somewhere in the middle of the 40 in the cat 4 race, work to be done!

Well, the weather certainly wasn't better today. I've consulted the Beaufort scale and I reckon today's racing took place in near gale force winds, plus the circuit had to be shortened due to a flood at the top hairpin. I didn't see much of the E123 race because I was sheltering, but Stuart seemed to be going well and said afterwards that he thought he'd finished not far outside the top ten. My main priority in the 4th cat race was to keep my front wheel in front of me, which I did for the most part aside from a bit of cyclocross when I got blown sideways off the tarmac.

All in all, a good series of races in warmer weather than we could have reasonably expected for the time of year. I don't think there were any crashes in the whole four weeks, either.

Well done both! Wind was epic today. There were a couple of fallers last week but on their own I think.

You're a braver man than me, Laurence -- pretty hairy conditions for racing in a close group!
