2014 Handicap competition

A link to the handicap rules will be up very soon. The basic rule is as described. Each course has a base time and the difference between this base time and your PB is your handicap. The handicap is then deducted from the actual time to give the handicap time.

There is subjectivity when a course has not been ridden before by a rider and this is explained in the rules. The draft handicaps and expected times have been completed for this season and the link is

Please let me know if you see any obvious mistakes. There may be differences in opinion but as people ride the handicaps become less subjective. If your name is not on the list might be worth checking your subs - have compiled from current list of memebers who have historically time trialled!

Looks ok Simon. A couple of the course numbers are wrong though the K8/10 and K34/10D should both be K34/10 and the K34/6G is now K37/6G. Not sure that it matters though.

An approximation on today's results as the marshals sent Amarjit and Martin off on a shorter course of 44 miles (along with 13 other riders). Their results have therefore been estimated as 50/44 * their time. On this basis (supported by a check of Garmin av speeds) gives the follwoing oints for the race with the total comp points further below. There are quite a few non-members on that list. Are all these people signing on the start sheet as Beacon members or is it just awkward to exclude non-members from the handicap table?

Edit - thinking about it, if points are awarded based on placings in individual races, surely it's vital to exclude non-members?

Non Beacon members should not be on the list - just need to know who they are and if it is marked as such when the results first go up that is a really big help. Chris has let me know on the last race who the non members are and have amended per the attached (and if those names were in prev races have also amended.

This is going to be close. Although Amarjit picked up max points. Martin grabbed top spot in the tables as all his points count whereas Amarjit replaced his worst points score with this result as now in 10 best scores territory. Martin will be in same territory from next tt. There are others breathing close down their necks though. Keri will be right up there after her next tt and Richard Kings not far behind either. This has the look of a close 4 way finish unless someone else can enter the fray.

Race is getting ever tighter with Keri and now Richard K having completed 10 races as well. Martin has a lead but much harder to improve on score with his lowest being a 34. Keri has a 23 point score that will drop out and eat up the difference on the leaderboard, Amarjit a 27 and Richard a 26. 6 races to go (I think) and positions may change yet.

After the very quick 25 on Wed here are the cumulative results. Keri's pb takes her to joint top of the leaderboard with a slight advantage over Martin in that her next score to be wiped is a 32 compared to a 34 for Martin. Richard lurking in the wings as is Amarjit. Will have to dust off the rules and find out what happens on a tiebreak as I don't know offhand. 5 to go and worth getting the points before the hill climb!

An important week for the top of the table clash with Keri and Amarjit ditching low scores for a 40 and 39 point haul respectively whilst Martin unchanged. Keri now put some clear water between her and Martin whilst Amarjit is close behind. 4 to go and down to 3 as will be hard (read not possible) for Richard K to catch the 382 posted on the board by Keri. Next time out Amarjit can lose a 32, Keri a 33 and Martin a 34.

Just as it looked as though Keri was putting distance into her challengers Martin slams in a 27 second PB with a 11-27 time on the K20/5 and grabs full points. Keri also PB'd by 7 seconds but on a fast night this gave 36 points which nudged her overall score forward but gave ground to Martin. Overall Keri has a 5 point lead. Martin next loses a 34 pointer and Keri a 36 pointer. Amarjit can still get in there but with only 3 events left time is running out. With the fast times being recorded I suspect some PB's will be needed to make up the gap. 3 events to go and this one looks as though it won't be decided until after the hill climb.

Following last night's TT I hope all the contenders are practising their hill reps. With a reduced field of 3 Beaconintes at the TT plenty of points on offer and Martin took good advantage grabbing 39 points and Lawrence took the top handicap honours. This takes the leaderboard to a ties currently with two to go and both Keri and Martin losing a 36 pointer next time around if they score higher.

As suspected the handicap has gone to the final climb with both Keri and Martin on equal points and also potentially losing the same number of points (36). Basically to improve their score Keri and Martin have to be in the top 4 on handicap. If both are in the top 4 then highest takes the prizes. If neither in the top 4 we have a tie and I don't know what the rules then are!!

In terms of the day I attach the handicaps for everyone that has a counting time (the only thing we do is exclude anyone who has not ridden a time trial this year from the handicap results). The list therefore includes everyone who could influence the final outcome and no others.

Riders highlighted as restricted cannot have a time better than the base time (3 mins). Some riders have an estimated time so please shout if anything wildly amiss. Estimated riders can go below base time. All other riders have times based on previous HC rides. Will publish results as soon as possible after the HC but everything attached so the results can be known immediately.

A very satisfactory conclusion to the Handicap competition. It's a draw with both of the leaders opting to not ride the hill climb and share the honours. It's been an extreamly tight competition all year and I'd like to thank everybody who competed for making it a very enjoyable season.

So here we have it with honours shared between Keri and Martin - warm congratulations to both on a series that could not have been closer and was in doubt up until the end. Amarjit and Richard were in the running for a long time and Laurence would have run very close with a few more events possibly even edging ahead? Overall 53 Beacon riders took part with 176 counting rides. The most popular events were the LMTT (a real classic and Beacon's open event), K36/4.5*2 series, and the Handicap 20. Here are the final scores but before then congrats to the winners and fitting the trophy is shared this year.
