So the first of the 5 mile events in July will be the Retro event. Bikes to qualify must be round tubes no rims deeper than 30mm no tri bars. It would be nice though if the bikes were actually retro so I'm thinking along the lines of an extra handicap for bikes pre modern age.

By this I mean pre aheadset so threaded stearer I think this will probably date the bike perfectly. This is all a bit of fun so just see what you can come up with.

Aero brake levers, when did they come in?
I still have the same rear light bracket in the shed, but no light that fits it. Why I have kept it I have no idea.

That has yet to be decided, Keith, and I think it's only right that Chris/Simon has the final say. However, I wonder whether, for example, (for the bottle of bubbly only, not for the general club comp) we might operate on the basis of the handicap already defined by Simon, PLUS x seconds per year by which the bike predates the year 2010. So someone could ride on a modern steel bike and get their normal handicap, whereas you could ride on the basis of your normal allowance plus 49 * x seconds.
Most people reckon that a modern TT bike is worth at least 2 minutes in a 25 (compared with a traditional machine). So, in a 5, we're talking about roughly half a minute. So an extra 1 second per year would give me 25 seconds for my 1985 bike, and you'd get 49 seconds for your 1961 bike.
Or you could simplify it and have age bands.
Or you could have a judge making subjective on-the-spot decisions, e.g. penalising people who put modern pedal systems on their old bikes.

Alan, my personal view is that it would be great to see some classic machines on display, even if they are only parked up at the start-finish area. However, I also know that you are more than capable of riding five miles at 'cruising' speed. I don't suppose you'll give Tony and Dave much of a run for their money on their RRA record-breaking tandem ... but so what? It's just a bit of fun, and I'll buy you a beer afterwards.

Besides, just think how your writing circle fans will swoon when you say, "Excuse me ladies, I must log off now, because I'm racing tonight."

I'm going to decide if a bikes eligible on the night. My definition is threaded steerer, no tri bars and wheels with more than 16 spokes. Roughly speaking this will date the bike in the late 80s. It was around this time that CTT lifted its ban on disc wheels and tri bars so the threaded steerer bit will largely self regulate. It would be nice if bikes didn't have STI levers but I realise that this will mean many machines won't qualify so I'm going to overlook this.
Ordinary aero levers will be fine there were plenty of these available from about 1985.

The combined age of me and bike(well most of it ) will be will be 107 , about the time in minutes it will take me to complete the course, a TT bike might well be worth half a minute but that,s on a modern road bike.
Should be a blast, because TT s aren't hard enough already
