Well here we go for a new season and if the numbers are right Amarjit has taken up where he left off with a first in the handicap placings closely followed by Kevin Frobisher - the only 2 riders to record PB's. So the first points of the season are as follows

Kevin and Amarjit top the table - slight correction from last week's TT - your handicapper has returned to 60 rather than 100 seconds in a minute which changed things slightly.

It's best not to attempt to understand it in my experience.

All you need to know is its a great competition that anyone can win and you need to do as many Beacon TTs as possible.

John,

If one has ridden a course before the calculation is quite simple and best illustrated by example.

Say a course has a base time of 20 minutes and your best time on that course is 22 minutes you then have a handicap of 2 minutes. Next time out if you then ride a 21 min your handicap time will be 19 mins (and your handicap for forthcoming rides will move to one minute).

It gets tricky when a course is new to a rider. If they have ridden several TT's I estimate a handicap time for them - not perfect as subjective the first time out but objective after the first time.

If they are relatively new to time trials they receive a basic handicap. This is then used but their handicap time cannot be lower than the base time for that course - in practice this means that anyone achieving a PB will be ahead of a someone who is restricted to base time - which seems fair.

Hope that helps and a spreadsheet showing handicap and base times is available via the website but not sure where is the easiest link - Steve Smith uploaded a few weeks ago

So far 35 riders have taken part in a Beacon TT this year which is a great turnout. The competition is beginning to take shape with Nick in the lead pursued by last year's joint winner Martin. Both these riders have ridden once more than the following pack and therefore their lead may well be eliminated later in the season as competition is best 10 races. Plenty of people in position to close the gap and maybe end with a competition as closely fought as last year.

The last result has shaken things up a bit with most of the leaderboard getting less points than normal leaving the way for strong performances from Alistair, Amarjit and Simon P to make big gains - looks very open

Alistair has carved himself out a bit of a lead at the top but that could all change quite quickly as riders get up to their full quota of 10 best counting rides. Overall so far this season we have had 45 people taking part in the handicap and rising.

The competition is hotting up! I'm looking forward to better conditions on the next couple of Wednesdays to hopefully set a new PB. Last Wednesday night was soul destroying!!

I notice that the race on 24th June is the "Club Handicap Champs". How does that relate to this competition?

The 24th June event is a 'one off' 20 mile handicap TT on K32/20 with a trophy for the winner (on handicap).

It's also another round of the year long handicap competition (as are all the club tts).

Amarjit goes top but looks like there will be a lot of riders in contention. Already many riders look as though they will get enough events in (10) to be competitive by the end of the season - expect another close finish. The ride on Wed produced a lot of PB's with honours to Dave Hughes and high points for some of the newer riders.

Just calculating handicaps now - you are right though last year was shortened and so those times have not been used in the handicap calc. Should be posting up handicap times in the next hour or so.

I have listed out the handicaps for Wed. There are a few estimates rather than based on actual times as the earlier ride this year was shortened to a 10 miler due to roadworks and last year's competition was also shortened.

The way of calculating has been, in order;

Previous times on the course over the last three years, ie 2012 onwards

Previous time on course if before 2012

Time from this year multiplied by 2 + 3minutes

Estimates by comparison to riders of similar strength

Base times of 8 mins 30 for men, 10 mins for J/V and 12 mins 30 for Ladies
Anyone on a base time calculation may not have a handicap time quicker than the course base time of 47 minutes - in practice this means someone with a base time will be beaten by anyone who records a PB

Finally any V60 riders are allowed a 1% deduction from their actual time

I have tried to make the estimates fair but as ever if there is an obvious mistake please let me know so I can correct before Wednesday, many thanks

Results after last Wednesday which saw some fast times. Very close at the top of the table with three riders completing 10 rides and now measured on their top ten results. Martin just edging it at the moment but with some fast times coming up he will have to go like the proverbial to get the big points and therefore result really in the mix. Plenty to play for.

Competition beginning to take shape now with Martin hanging on in first place by 2 points from Simon Wheeler. Simon has the advantage though of being able to drop a lower points score next time round (coincidentally by 2 points) so very close. Amarjit has raced 9 times and could easily shoot up the leaderboard especially as he also has one low ranking event to drop if he can get in at least two more races. With 4 races to go several others in the mix particularly Richard K, Alistair H and Laurence C with Ian,Phil, Nick, Paddy, Keith among others all capable of getting the necessary points

With three races to go there are three favourites now, namely Martin, Simon W and Amarjit - with Amarjit having plenty of points to go for as dropping a '21' next time out. Others are in the frame but need some big numbers.

2 more events to go and loooks like it will come down to the hill climb. Simon has taken over the top spot closely followed by Amarjit. Anyone's call here as Amarjit has some low scores to lose if he scores highly. Also in the hnt are Martin (but with some big asks now), Richard, possibly Phil and Matt. Others may be close but looking harder now as the evnts are running out and not many low scores to replace. Here is the table, please let me know if any changes needed.

With one round to go great timing on Amarjit's part to hit the top of the leaderboard closely followed by Simon Wheeler. Will put together some notes before the Hill Climb to allow for understanding of the winner after the HC.
At first glance it does now look like a straight battle between Amarjit and Simon.

This is actually quite exciting!!!!! Ive looked at the handicaps for these two and I think they are about right.

Neither of them has done it in the last 4 years though so they won't be able to exceed the base time I don't think.

The hill climb is the decider for the handicap trophy. This year the competition has again been closely fought and only as we go into the last race of the season has the field narrowed to two - Amarajit Sanghera and Simon Wheeler.

Amarajit has 376 points and Simon 374. Both of their lowest current ranking scores is 33 points - ie to improve their current score they each need to get 34 points or more on the hill climb.

Listed out below are the handicap times for the hill climb. Those on a standard handicap (1-30 for men, 2-00 for juniors and 3 mins for ladies) may not record a handicap time below the base time for the course of 3 mins. For example if I am a new rider to TT and have a standard handicap of 1-30 and I record a time of 4 mins it would appear as though my handicap time would be 2-30. However this is restricted to 3 minutes. However if I have done several TT's in the year (at least 4) and been given an estimated time then this restriction does not apply. Hence if my estimated handicap is 1 minute and I do a 3-58 then my handicap time is 2-58. This second scenario applies to both Amarajit and Simon, ie they can both get below the base time.

Please let me know if any questions asap so all can be clear before the race & also if any of the handicaps look wildly out (some of people on the standard handicap time will look out as they are strong riders but don't TT but then the restriction kicks in)

I did the hill climb last year so why am I on the standard handicap? (My 2012 time is probably the one that counts, too.)

Thanks Richard - you did it in the same time as the standard handicap and therefore looked liked it was standard! Thanks you have a 1-30 handicap but CAN go below base time. Best Simon

Although I also noticed that Rich Bussell has a handicap of -0.46 when it should be -0.06 if he did a 2:54 (IIRC) last year? Sorry to be a pain!

Thanks Richard - good spot, much appreciated - want to get it right. Fact that Richard had a negative handicap threw the calc out, have corrected and will republish before the day - will hang on in case anything further. Mind you the way Richard is riding a handicap of -2.59 is probably about right!

Well first of all a big congratulations to Amarjit for winning the handicap. Always good for the spectators when the competition goes to the wire.Having to produce the goods on the hill climb is a nervy time, even though in the event Aamrjit did not need the extra points to send him clear of Simon Wheeler.

I think that must have been one of the most closely contested handicap competitions in recent history with several members in contention until the last couple of rounds. Overall there were 21 counting events (Martin McGowan riding in 18 of them) and 54 people took part. 11 riders managed to do at least 10 events and put themselves in with a good chance of winning and there were 285 rides. Many thanks to all who took part and made this such a hotly contested contest.

Well done Amarjit. A hotly contested handicap competition as we've become used to seeing over recent years. Thanks to Simon for working out handicaps & keeping score.
