Bummer for that Piotr chap... arrived 26 secs too late so got his 26 secs penalty, otherwise he'd have been 3rd!

Had to wait about 30 minutes for a slot too I think, I was wondering why he bothered stopping at the start.

If the course has not been ridden before I used the recent midweek results for estimated times where nothing otherwise available and base time for riders with fewer events. This meant that results are as follows, with congrats to Richard K;

K33 / 10D
Act H'cap H'cap time Points
Richard Kings 25.40 7.03 18.37 40
Ian Taylor 25.15 6.20 18.55 39
Amarjit Sanghera 26.19 7.21 18.58 38
Paddy Allaway 22.10 2.46 19.24 37
Rhys Richards 24.39 4.56 19.43 36
Laurence Cooley 25.45 5.49 19.56 35
Martin McGowan 23.40 3.34 20.06 34
Steve Croggan 24.15 4.00 20.15 33
Jessica Rhodes-Jones 25.58 5.29 20.29 32
Simon Dighton 23.18 2.47 20.31 31
Simon Wheeler 25.44 4.58 20.46 30
Alistair Hey 24.17 3.23 20.54 29
Matt Clegg 25.18 5.30 21.00 28
Martin Davies 25.38 5.30 21.00 27
Simon Packer 25.28 4.05 21.23 26
Keith Adcock 27.00 5.30 21.30 25
James Tate 23.57 2.12 21.45 24

Sorry James - just you are down as having a really fast PB for a 10 miler of 23-12 in the records - this meant that your time of 23-57 was outside your PB and therefore placed behind those who got PB's. Next time round the bar is higher for all those who got closer to PB's and lower for you on this course as you will be measured against 23-57. Hope that helps and good ride, best Simon

Not convinced that is fair TBH, as I've not ridden this course before.

For example Martin has a PB of 22:31 and rode 23:40
I have a PB of 23:12 and rode a 23:57

Therefore Martin came further outside his PB than I did, but he's ridden this course before and I've not....however I've received more of a penalty?? How exactly is that fair? Answer...IT'S NOT!!

I feel that the system of handicap points is fundamentally flawed with respect to if someone has ridden the course before. It's not really fair to base points on results from a totally different course under entirely different conditions. I understand that you have very little else to go by, but perhaps some sort of avg time for a 10 based upon ALL your results rather than just going by your best result.
If I someone sets a PB on a dead flat run with no wind, how that can be used to set a score on a hilly/windy TT? You will score someone who's done the hilly before based upon their last attempt which will be slow, but score another rider who's not done the hilly on a really fast PB, therefore massively disadvantaging the rider who's new to that hilly course.
This is not a good system at all.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I'm annoyed I seem to be given the shitty end of the stick just because I haven't ridden a course before.

The rules state that a rider who has never ridden the course before can't receive a handicap time slower than the base time for the course. In this case 21 min. Even If you had received the base novice handicap for this course of 5:30 you still wouldn't of been able to get a time better than 21 min. The reason Martin received a better handicap is because it was based on his actual pb for this course. Simon is trying to come up with handicaps that reflect riders abilities. The K33/10D is not a particularly slow course so I don't think it's that unreasonable to use your pb for the distance. Next year James your handicap on this course will be 2:57. It kind of only really matters if your challenging for the trophy anyway.

It's inevitable that in specific instances the system is unfair. However, if you didn't have the rule about no one who is new to a course being limited to the base time, you would have another, potentially grosser unfairness, because someone who is really fast could bowl up at a course he/she has never ridden before, get a whopping handicap and blast the result to shreds. Also, the system is already very complex and trying to make it cover every possible eventuality would make it more complex still. The rules shouldn't impose an unreasonable administrative burden on the people who run the competition/events.
