New club VET 25 record

Post by Simon Dighton » 24 Jul 2016 17:19

Feel a bit bad putting my own results up but thought I had to as got the Vet 25 record today coming home in 54-04 on the Glyn Neath course in South Wales

Conditions were very wet, had to have the visor up as couldn't see a thing with the spray and the rain otherwise. However temperature not bad and wind was light and probably behind on way home so actually all good for fast times. Seemed a pretty consistent effort and a big PB for me as well (4 mins on almost the same course - this year slightly harder as finish moved a bit uphill)

Best

Excellent stuff Simon, you're rewriting the record books at quite a pace, brilliant work!

Tremendous performance, Simon!

I have to confess to being of the school of thought that believes times on that particular course really need an asterisk by them, but a very short 54 is a fantastic ride anywhere. Your performances this year are putting the club vets' records on a very high shelf!

Hi George

Have to say I am slightly surprised it qualifies! Although this year they did change the course a little bit so that it ended past the slip road and a little of the way up the hill at the end which compensates slightly.

Certainly going down the hill on the bars at 45mph was a bit scary when the rain obliterated the view!

Simon, the only real point, I suppose, is that it does qualify. Other people have set club records there in the past, several club members' PBs were done there, and in a discipline where so much depends on absolute times, I don't blame you in the slightest for going there. If your opponents are going there, why would you disadvantage yourself?

However, I don't think that the course is what the rule-makers had in mind when the rules were relaxed quite some time ago. (I forget when; it might have been as long as 20 years ago.)

Great ride Simon really well done.
I didn't ride there for years. But gave in as ever one else was riding that course. As you say George it does qualify so why wouldn't you.

That's the conclusion I finally came to - tried to enter a couple of open events earlier in the year and didn't get in as time too slow so thought time to be on a downhill playing field - does feel a bit like cheating though even if my conscience is slightly rescued by the fact it now goes part way up the hill at the end. Also thought not getting any younger so better have a go with as many advantages as I can! Not sure how much time it gives one but know that I covered the last, slightly uphill, ten miles in almost exactly 22 mins.

Great result Simon. Agree with all the previous comments re just do it. That time is impressive no matter which way you look at it. I am guessing the wind was following on the return leg, perfect if it was.

Conditions were pretty good. Was raining steadily but the wind was low and was a slight tailwind on way home

I agree it should be banned and not count towards club records...

Well done Simon, you must be well pleased!
