Welcome to the handicap competition for 2021.

Quick refresh of the rules. There are 21 counting events this year namely all the club time trials + Little Mountain, Janet Kelly & the Midlands 50.

Your best 10 of these results count (or all of them if riding less than 10)

The best time on handicap gets 40 points, 2nd place 39, 3rd place 38 etc

Your handicap is the difference between a standard time set for each course and your PB on that course from the last 3 years. For example the first race of the series is the county 20 (3 April enter v soon!) which has a base time of 47 minutes. If your PB in the last 3 years is 50 mins your handicap is 3 mins. If you ride a 49 minute on the night your handicap time for the night will be 46 mins (49 less 3). Lowest handicap time is the winner.

There are some details - if you haven't ridden the course in the last 3 years I will keep going back until I find the last year in which you rode and use the best time for that year. If you have never ridden the course generally you will receive a standard handicap time. In the county 20 example a senior male has a standard handicap of 8 mins and 30 secs and a senior female of 12 mins and 30 secs. These will be used to calculate your handicap time on the night although with a standard handicap you are never allowed a better time than the course base - in effect this means you can beat everyone except those who set a new PB on the night. The time you set on the 3 April will then be used to calculate your handicap for next time you ride the county 20 (which is a really good course, almost as good as Little Mountain!).

I try and put up the results in the week following the race - always super helpful if the scratch results show who is a Beacon member as the competition is restricted to first claim Beacon members.

Think that is it & I will also attach draft handicap times for the season (noting they change once racing starts due to race results). Please take a look especially at your own and let me know if I have anything wrong.

best, Simon

Hi Simon,

Minor correction req'd to my surname...no 's' at the end. I'm currently at the bottom of the list...is that a sign?

Thanks

Simon - amazing work!

I’m listed twice - unless there’s a second Beacon member with the same name? Does this mean I get both handicaps added together? 😂

Not sure which one is correct - happy to help unpick it with you - let me know if you need me to confirm anything - I suspect most of my precious results are probably still on Strava or Garmin somewhere.

Thanks Mark / Matt,

Now up and running I will get that corrected and do some checking to see which results I should use.

Think first time on the K33 so I have used the K34 handicaps. Ian snagged a PB (he keeps doing it every year) and took full points whilst Ed did a monster time coming in with a short 55. (Are John and Joe Williams the same person?)

Simon

My head is exploding just thinking about the maths you’re having to go through here......but I think my actual time
For yesterday’s Ride was 63minutes rather than the 73 you’ve got me down for?

Sorry if I’ve misread it......

Got up yesterday at 5-30am to go racing down in Newbury and my brain just wasn't working when I got back!

Tricky one to handicap as not the usual course - so I have given everyone an extra 7 mins of handicap which does make a difference when comparing to riders on standard base times who are restricted to 100 minutes best (I can give a longer explanation if wanted). Top of the tree and just squeezing in within the two hour mark by 13 seconds is Stuart White so many congrats on a superb course. There are some riders showing as Beacon but I could not see on the membership list. Please let me know if I have missed you off incorrectly and I will update. For that reason I have not updated the points table to date. On riders restricted to base times I have awarded the superior place to the faster rider for both men and women.

Looks like some good rides there in what must have been overcast conditions at best.

Congrats to George L on smashing his PB on this course and taking the honours. Stuart and Mark will have proper handicap times next time out so won't be restricted to the course base time.

Overall the competition is looking pretty close. Ian Taylor is right up there - a hattrick of titles would be quite something. However it is Mark Roberts who heads the leader board with Stuart White, Claire Fudge, and Ed Moss both showing strongly after just 2 races.

Mark and Ian are almost neck and neck. Great riding from mark and for Ian to be challenging after winning two year's running is some going. Others could be in the mix if they get their rides in.

Some good times on a decent evening for the club 10. Big thanks to Gemma, Dave and other helpers for making sure we could all ride - really appreciated.
Congrats to Roger C on winning the club 10 (did George go off course?). Some of us older riders try to keep Roger honest but was always going to be tough - mind you looking at how fast Ed is going he may soon be giving everyone a run for his money again. Ian T is on holiday in France so is missing from the points and George Lazenby smashed his PB by about 4 and a half minutes!!

Points for the evening are attached and the cumulative results further below which sees Mark and Ian neck and neck (think everyone knows but Ian is really riding the TdF for charity)
