A, B and C club runs July, August and September 2016

Post by WorcsPhil » 06 Jun 2016 09:22

It's summer in Olympic year, and what the London Olympics taught us was that there was a 385% increase in people volunteering to lead club runs in the few months before and afterwards, so I'm expecting the same from Rio. With the Tour de France and Olympic road races scheduled in this quarter, surely this will prick your interest and find yourself signing up to lead before you've even realised you've done it.

If you are able to lead a club run or two, please post the date and café destination below. Don't forget, first-time leaders are more than welcome.

Note: This purpose of this topic is compile the schedule of club runs. Discussion about individual rides, including rider lists, should be done in a separate thread - one for each Sunday.

Leading a Ride

Post by Si_Walker » 06 Jun 2016 21:15

I thought it might be worth explaining for potential new leaders what is involved in leading a ride.

1) decide on a destination then plan / use a previous route (from the resources page, Strava or ask other club member) for the ride
2) notify the chosen cafe a few days before the ride that a group will be arriving and tell them the approx number of rider (guess) and estimated time of arrival. There is a list of cafes on the resources page).
3) take a note of the names of riders, preferably at the start, but certainly at the cafe and then post the names on the Message Board at the end of the ride. This is important for insurance purposes.

Leading the ride is not much different from participating in a normal ride, just maintain a steady pace, try to keep the group together and don't leave anyone behind. If you are unsure, ask an experienced rider to support you.

If you are a regular Beacon rider and haven't lead for a while or never before, please step up to do your share of leading rather than leaving it to the regular volunteers.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Just to add that it isn't always necessary or even possible to book cafes in advance. This can be particular useful when you can't be sure of numbers, weather etc. But don't just turn up at a cafe on spec, book in advance unless you know there isn't a problem.
These are a couple cafes I know and use where there is no need to book in advance.

The SVR cafe Bewdley. (you need to check that trains are running on website as its closed when they aren't)

Halfpenny Green Airport Cafe.

My other regular cafes, Arley arboretum, Kinver Edge etc. like a phone call or text on the morning with approximate numbers, although I can't say it makes much difference to the speed of service.
:)

In addition to Pete's comment:

Advance notice is not necessary for Evesham, Croome Park, Worcester Country Park, Coffee#1, Churchfields, Toddington GWSR Station, Wyre Forest, Burford (Tenbury), British Camp, Broadway Tower, Cobhouse, Bridgnorth SVR Station and Wellesbourne Airfield.

Advance notice is useful for Rays Farm, Cleobury Cafe, Bromyard, Alcester, Upton Secret Mess and Comberton Golf Course. There are probably others too that require advance warning.

Alternative Club Ride - North Staffs & Cheshire

I've not arranged one of these for a while so thought it's about time.

Looking at early August to do the ride with a preliminary date of the 7th.

No firm route decided as yet but expect climbs such as the Col Du Cat & Fiddle, Col Du Gunn Hill and possibly Col Du Mow Cop to be included.

Distance will be approx 60-80 miles

The ride will be expected to be at the lower end B Run pace to enable some of the recent C runners who have moved up to a B, to enjoy the ride. No one will be dropped and it is intended to be a social ride.

Further details to follow

Phil, put me down for an A run on 31st July, not led a ride so thought it was about time. New destination, Wyevale Garden Centre, Black Hill near Stratford Upon Avon, 60 miles BH to BH. Checked out today looks okay. Couple of short stints on main roads but has potential for alternatives routes in the future. Bike locks will be required.

We've not had the pleasure of Steve Smiths company as much this year meaning that his popular c run/century in as long as it takes ride has not been on the calendar.
So if I'm not treading on Steves shoes, I'd be happy to lead a ride on the 11th September very much in the spirit of Steves previous runs (probably using a similar if not the same route) which is perfect for anyone who has not ridden a century before.
As ever, if anyone wishes to lead a "within usual guidelines" c run on that date, feel free.

In time honoured tradition, we shall have an early start, 8-15, but more importantly, finish off with a celebratory beverage at the Coach and Horses, Weatheroak Hill.

Hope to have a good turnout

JD

I'm going to have to bail on the B run for the 4th Sept....Just realised I've double booked myself for this B run and the Club 25 TT Champs...so obviously I can't do both. I'd like to do the TT, so if anyone can volunteer to take the B that day, that would be great. You can either choose you own destination or go to Brewood via this route I had planned:

"100 in a Quicker Time Than the B Run Magical Mystery A Run"
. Please pardon the snappy title.

This magical mystery tour will take riders along roads never previously used on a club run. Self inquiry should lead you to ask, "why is it magical"? The answer is obvious, all hills on this route exist as an illusion to the eyes and don't exist in reality.

What I can reveal....

There is only one single horrible climb as we take a 'cut through the chase' , the meaning of which will become apparent. Generally speaking the route is a roller coaster. Some of the lanes are potholed and require some care. The return portion will be flatter and familiar to riders. The estimated climb is 1543m overall, so not excessive.

Overall estimated time: 7h15m - 7h45m
