Club Runs - 13th November

Post by WorcsPhil » 07 Nov 2016 11:12

We managed to get over 25 riders out on a lousy, cold and wet Sunday, and that was even with a lateish C-ride leader, and no A-run volunteer at all. Thanks for George and Pete/Mike for stepping up and for Dave for leading a non-intro intro.

So I looked on google on how to get volunteers, and the general view was be persistent, make it personal, point out the benefits and don't over-pressurise, so although guidance 1 and 4 contradict, I'll continue to

- be persistent, me again!
- get personal, oi Orchard, Pershore awaits!
- point out benefits, 2 club run points or a crème egg?
- don't over-pressurise...errr, I'll leave Lord Whiteman to do that

Anyway, point made. This week's rides are:

A: Bringsty - Philip Whiteman
B: Charlecote - Colin Groves
C: Worcester Country Park - Pete Norman

There's also a Beacon Burst, i.e. a 40-50 mile ride to and from the Black Horse with no coffee stop, led by Nick Shenton.

There's also a Wednesday club run this week, see the Cycling Weekly post on the MB for details.

EDIT - Change of venue to Bringsty. Distance: 108km. Just two climbs include Clifton Bank and Ankerdine Hill. Outbound: Cutnall Green, Holt Heath, Clifton-Upon-Teme. Return: Great Witley, Stourport, Chaddeseley. http://www.bringsty-cafe.co.uk/

Discussion:-

The chosen topic for cafe discussion is nonviral systems for nucleic acid delivery offer a host of potential advantages compared with viruses, including reduced toxicity and immunogenicity, increased ease of production and less stringent vector size limitations, but remain far less efficient than their viral counterparts. We will have a chance to chat over review recent advances in the delivery of nucleic acids using polymeric and inorganic vectors. It will be interesting for the wider Beacon membership to consider the wide range of materials being designed and evaluated for these purposes while considering the physical requirements and barriers to entry that these agents face and reviewing recent novel approaches towards improving delivery with respect to each of these barriers. Club run participants will appreciate the overview of past and ongoing nonviral gene therapy clinical trials.

As I am sure you will agree, this will be a club run that is both intellectually stimulating and a good day's ride.

Sunday's Beacon Burst will be around 50 miles non stop.

Heading out and through - Alvechurch, Feckenham, Elmbridge, Chaddesley Corbett.

Pace will be at no more than B Run speed.

For those wanting a café stop the standard B run to Charlecote will be around 58 miles. I don't expect a particularly late return.

Pace won't be anything heroic based on my lack of consistent riding lately.

Worcester Country Park; out Lickeys, Hanbury back via Droitwich, Belbroughton and St Kenelms Pass, if not then straight over Dayhouse!

We will stop at 11am for a moments personal reflection

50 miles 2480 feet climbing, weather is OK and the café is going to be open!

Please download the route onto your Garmin and take a turn leading. If you need any advice on this then pm or even phone on 07779912359 and I will help.

See y'all

A good ride today to Bringsty. The outbound ride was slightly delayed so we diverted away from Clifton Bank and headed straight to the cafe. By the skin of teeth there was just enough seats for us all. This was the first time we have used Bringsty cafe, the staff were friendly and the food was decent. I would advice against this cafe during the winter in case outdoor seating is the only option on a busy day.

We returned at a brisk pace via the Shrawley lumps.

Phil Richards
Philip Whiteman (L)
Matt Taylor
John Hunt
Ian Regan
Keith Adcock
Alec Douglas-Hume
Jess Rhodes-Jones
James Gillies
Jose Binnatti
Ben Walmsley
Craig Walmsley

A big welcome to James Gillies on his first club run. He certainly towed the rest of us at times rather than the other way round. As an experienced audaxer with huge mileages, I think he will be a certain winner for next year's trophy! Indy Singh had to sadly return home after braking problems :(

On todays well disciplined B run to Charlecote were:

Colin Groves (L)
Richard Horridge
Alistair Hey
Si Walker
John Williams
Phil Gameson
Graham Gamblin
Rob Wade
Peter Roed

Apologies for the slightly uninspired route. We repeated some of the outward leg on the return but made good time at a sensible pace. Some team work found a suitable diversion around a road closure so thanks for that.

Enjoyed today - great group!
