Time trials - July, August and September 2017

Post by JessRJ » 29 Jul 2017 19:56

As we head into August, there are still a good few open TTs left to enter - here are a couple that would be good races for those who already race or fancy giving TTs a go:

20th August - 10 mile TT, K41/10 - part of the Midland Women's Time Trial series, but anyone can enter (last year in the MWTTS races there were people on road bikes, TT bikes and mountain bikes!) Open to men and juniors as well - it's a quiet, single carriageway course, straight out and back:

Men's event: https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/15790
Women and junior's event: https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/15791

16th Sept - 10 mile TT, V718 - the fastest 10 mile course in the country! Up and down a dual carriageway, so not everyone's idea of fun, but it is ridiculously fast and I think good fun. It can be hard to get a race on this course unless you already have a fast PB, however they have an event on 16th Sept that includes a category for 'slowest 120 riders', as well as a standard women's event:

Slowest 120 riders (men): https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/15945
Women and junior's event: https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/15947

Post on here if you fancy giving either or both of these events a try, and if there are any other races (open / club events) you are planning on doing to see if we can get a few Team Beacon riders at the same event - there will be a team prize at the event on 20th August!

This is also the place for TT race reports for July - Sept - it would be great to hear how everyone is getting on at any open events, or other club events :)

I raced up on the A25/11 course (up and down the A50 near Burton on Trent), at the South Pennine RC Joe Summerlin trophy event this afternoon. Cross-headwind on the way out and cross-tailwind back, a few draggy bits but generally a fast course. There is one set of traffic lights on the course so it's a bit pot luck whether you get through them when they are on green, or have to wait. I tried to do a 50 mile TT on the same course a couple of weeks ago and took the wrong turn at the first roundabout (200 m from the start line :)) and ended up in Derby on a totally different dual carriageway...this week however was much better! I did a 53.41, to come 1st woman and took 1 min 40 secs off the Beacon senior women's 25 mile record :)

Another fantastic performance, Jess, especially in the conditions! (I thought it was quite blowy for pootling about in the local lanes.)

Here's my current (semi-provisional) list for August and September. Some of them are are a bit of a pain to get to when you're carless so we'll see. It shouldn't come as much surprise that these are all Hillclimbs!

August 23rd (18:30): KH5 Burton Dasset hill (Banbury Star CC)
August 24th (19:00): KH11 Gorcott Hill (Bromsgrove Olympique CC)

September 5th (18:30): KH1 Ankerdine (Worcester St. Johns CC)
September 7th (18:30): KH28 Saintbury Hill (Stratford CC)
September 10th: L804 Great Dun Fell (Border City Whys CC) - OPEN EVENT
September 12th (19:00): KH11 Corcott Hill (Reddich road & path CC)
September 16th (13:00): Cotswold Veldrijden (3-stage hillclimb) - OPEN EVENT
September 17th (10:00): KH12 Beacon HC Champs

Think thats most of them! I've heard good things about the Cotswold Veldrijden - here's Tejvan's take on it http://cyclinguphill.com/cotswold-veldr ... ill-climb/. Had a think about doing Long Hill (Buxton CC) but it sounds a bit too shallow for my tastes.

Great plan Dave :D hill climb season is nearly here! Have you got national hill climb champs on your list as well? Think we talked about it a few months ago - you'd need a good couple of placings at open events to qualify but would be a cool goal :)

Yep - Nationals are definitely on my list! Got maybe 4 or 5 in October I can potentially get to before the closing date for the Nationals so a few chances to place well eh. I guess that Winster climb was technically an open CTT event so that can go in the log book.

There are a few good opens close by in October if I recall, but they're for a different thread!

...and there's a new kid on the block of course, namely Ryan Evanson

Get him along to these if you haven't already, he could be a contender for some trophies!

Yep - if its not a CTT open event then its the same deal as with our club TTs (although the sign-on price will vary)

Great time Jess on the 25 and well done on smashing the women's record, some going and you didn't even have the advantage of going down the ski slope. Best Simon

Nice one, Rich! So close - I'm sure you'll go under 24 next season with a better start to the year than you had this year.

Gonna go to the following this week - anyone else? Nowt overly exciting but half-decent warmups to the HC season.

Banbury Star CC Hillclimb on Burton Dasset hill (KH5) tomorrow (Weds 23rd), 18:30. Planning to take a train from Moor Street to Leamington and ride over, seems like the cheapest / shortest solution.

Bromsgrove Olympique CC hillclimb on Gorcott hill (KH11) on Thursday 24th, 19:00. Just going to ride from Stirchley.

Both are ~1 minute sprint climbs, big-ring and in the drops stuff.

Had a crack at Burton Dassett hill (KH5) yesterday, hosted by Banbury Star CC. Clocked 1:13 (Joint 6th) which I'm a little miffed about - I was certain that the CTT route ended about 200m further on than the finish line was at the end of a flat section. So I prepared to make up time on the sprint to the line and left a bit in the tank up the steep section - came round the corner to see everyone standing around and thought 'Huh, weird.', passed the line where the keeper shouted my time just as I was switching up for the sprint. Darnit.

You live and learn!

Just found out that the Midlands CTT site is wrong (quel surprise) - BOCC's Hillclimb will not be on KH11 (gorcott) but KH12 (Winwood Heath) tonight at 7. Which is a good thing, right?

How was the Winwood Heath hill climb Dave? Ready for club champs?!

Well done to James Tate on a new 10 mile PB of 21.10 on the V718 course in Hull at the weekend, cracking time!

Great actually - the field was only 5 wide including me which helped my 2nd placing a bit! Phil Whiteley from Worcester St. Johns CC won with 3:08, 10s ahead of me. Ready to shave a good chunk off on the 17th! Just need to learn to not go balls to the wall on the first section - I get excited and find pacing a real problem which is deadly on a snorter like KH12.

As a fat boy at the back when it comes to hills I am truly impressed by all this HC activity. Could be a good HC season, along with all the other excellent accomplishments this year. Well done to James Tate as well.

Cheers, it was a little unexpected given the pretty horrendous time I've had of late and the inability to commit to any training. I've had to cancel loads of planned events, but this was one I was able to finally get to, so it was a nice little end of yr bonus to be able to finally break into 21's. Just a tad gutted I couldn't have squeezed another 11s out, but that's a goal for next yr now... :D

Not a big one but it looks like a bunch of Beacon climbers are going to be at Gorcott Hill tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1830 for Reddich Road and Path CC's HC. Should be fun.

Here's a round-up of hill-climb season that I wrote with John, Dave and Jess's help: http://www.beaconrcc.org.uk/hubub/2017/ ... -round-up/. If anyone ever wants to write a report for the blog about time trials more generally, let me know.

It would be fab to get even more going to hillclimbs next year - start contesting some team prizes!
