Club runs - 1st October

Post by WorcsPhil » 25 Sep 2017 09:19

Let's all bow down to Paul Johnson, who is now officially crowned Club run champion for the 16/17 season for the third year running...he doesn't get to keep the trophy. I'll post the final scores in a day or two.

...and what a weekend, we had 18 people on the two club runs at the weekend, thanks to Nick Shenton and Matt Hale for leading and finding a route that kept away for the mass of cyclists heading west on the veloBirmingham...and talking about that, I estimate that we had well over 30 Beacon riders riding the inaugural VeloBirmingham, and although there has been a lot of criticism, as I have posted elsewhere, I really enjoyed it and it seems as if it will be back in 2018.

It would also be remiss of me not to mention the Hughes' family exploits last weekend...with Dave becoming National Crit champion (if you haven't read Dave's summary of the race, I urge you to do so, it's edge of the seat stuff!) and Anne becoming World champion in the Triathlon in Rotterdam. Simply fantastic. The biggest double-chapeau is doffed...well done, both

Anyway, we're are now starting the 2018/2019 club run season, so let's have a good start and get people volunteering to lead rides. Please post here for this week, and on the October/November/December thread so that we can fill in some gaps. I have put myself down to lead twice, and the Pied Piper has also volunteered, please can we have an influx to that thread please, otherwise, I'll send the 'boys' round. You don't want Paul Johnson knocking on your door at 10pm at night,. let me tell you that!

This week's rides (which need infilling) are:

A: Wellesbourne (I think, that's the one in the square) - Ian Taylor
B: Worcester Country Park - Phil Gameson
C: Alcester - Pete Norman

Intro ride: Dave Cox will lead an intro ride to Avoncroft cafe near Bromsgrove, supported by Simon Woodward

Please give some enthusiasm to the club!

I'm happy to ride shotgun for Dave on the intro ride. Do you have a route in mind Dave?

Ian,
how about we go see the hill climb champs at Shelsley Walsh? The road hill race starts at 1100. Not sure about macchiato and bacon buttie venues out that way?

Barry

I was actually planning on Charlecote I'm afraid, probably the cafe in the square rather than the garden centre, as I haven't been out that way for ages. It's also fairly flat and a shortish run back so we'd likely be back early pm (I have a Sunday afternoon commitment I need to get back for in good time).

However, if you're keen to visit Shelsey please feel free to lead the run, I'll happily step back and lead on an alternate date - let me know.

Ian

If any of the runs do go to Shelsley Walsh there will be members racing in the under 8s and under 10s cx at 10 then 10.20 then the hill climbers at 11 up the tarmac then women and men in cx after that so definitely some good spectating to be had. Fitting into any club run tricky I expect though but the great cafe there will be open.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was due to ride the Worcester sportive this weekend, but it has been postponed. I have now scored a couple of free tickets for the Mad Malvern Hatter on Saturday. (If anyone wasnts to join me?). Sorry for the distraction. Forecast for Sunday is not great, so your short flat route might be more appropriate rather than a long(ish) lumpy ride with a lot of standing around.
Cheers

I am willing to lead the B run on Sunday, in which case it will be to Worcester Country Park.
I have yet to decide on the route, but it will be tried and tested (i.e. borrowed), and almost certain between 50 and 60 miles and not too hilly.
I will try and set the pace to satisfy everyone, but if it's too fast you will need to tell me (or get someone else to get a message to the front).

I can only find one route for Worcester Country Park, which is:
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/BRTWebUI/Course/483367

Despite having been posted by Phil Whiteman this is both fairly short (86Km, 54 miles) and relatively flat (785m / 2,600' climbing)!

Just in case anyone wants to download the route, I found that the "Export" button is not visible in Chrome, but it is in Internet Explorer (top of the screen).

Phil - Just a quick note regarding Belbroughton. Roads through the village are closed for the Scarecrow weekend. It will impassable on two wheels due to the volume of visitors but walking through on foot for about half a kilometre will be feasible. A diversion can be made through Chaddesley Woods and Fairfield.

Depending upon my recovery from a recent bout of laryngitis, I may join you out to Worcester.

Phil, thanks for pointing out the road closure.
I will reroute to avoid Belbroughton on the way back, instead going via Fairfield.
The diverted bit of the route is:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25742681
[I couldn't work out how to amend the existing route.]
This is about the same length as before, but possibly a bit more climbing.

The B run was a small and select group of 4 today:
Phil Gameson (nominally leading)
John Hitchcock (actually leading on the way out)
Claire Fudge
Wayne Gibbs
The route I had chosen was actually one sticking to gritted roads and I was having trouble reading my Garmin (which was not willing to give me turn instructions) in the rain. John agreed to lead on the way out, coming up with a route involving some roads I did not remember.
John made his own way back from Worcester Country Park, to the accompaniment of disturbing sounds from his failing rear hub.
Claire's non drive side crank came off part way back, and a fruitless search for a missing bolt we managed to make do and so we continued.
Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable club run.
At about 15.4mph overall I hope the pace was about right.

As our esteemed club run secretary quite correctly pointed out, today's A run was to Wellesbourne, not Charlecote.

Enjoying the unseasonably dry and balmy weather were:

Ian Taylor
Barry Evans
Phil Richards
Andy Wrightson
Matt Regan
Keith Adcock

No doubt inspired by the Velo last week, we encountered several motorists who were so keen to show their support for cycling that they seemed to be trying to join the ride in their cars. Either that or they were offering us tows via wing mirrors. At least that's how I interpreted the various gesticulations from those in the driving seats...

Thanks for leading, Ian. Great to see the old band (Taylor/Adcock/Regan) back together again on a club run, reeling off their old hits. Just a pity that Nic 'Robbie' Vipond, the jazz influenced rhythm guitarist wasn't in the reunion...artistic differences, I guess :D

Thx Ian n all. Mucho fun today in the barmy sunshine 8) I'm glad I didn't over dress.
Can we have a whip round for the club secretary's services and buy him a new saddle bag? His current one is quite disturbing  and is no where near as taut and plump as Matt's Squirrel-filled pouch

Haha, you'll be glad to know that I've officially retired my saddle bag, Barry. Closer examination showed it was only hanging on by a thread, and there's nothing worse, of course, than something dangling helplessly below your saddle!

Thanks Pete for leading the C ride.

It was my first club ride, and I'll be back! Not for a few weeks though unfortunately. All being equal I'll be back on the 22nd. I'll probably do the B ride, although I'm doing the Droitwich- Witney Audax on the Saturday so I'll see how I feel!
