Club runs - 12th November

Post by WorcsPhil » 06 Nov 2017 09:47

28 riders out at the weekend over the four rides, with particular thanks to Toby, Nick, Pete on the A, B and C runs respectively, and Dave leading and Gemma supporting on the Intro ride.

Judging from the comments here and on strava, the issue of conversation this week was mudguards. The official club run position we have is that mudguards are NOT compulsory on rides in the winter, but it is good practice to have them on your bike when the roads are wet or muddy. You are certainly welcome to come along if your bike is not fitted with mudguards, but be aware of the effect behind you, so perhaps, ride towards the back or warn when puddles are to be ridden through. Anyway, we certainly don't want to put anybody off coming along on club runs due to this issue...so don't be.

...and to prove the point, I rode a long, muddy audax on Saturday without mudguards, so I'm no better! Yes, an audax rider without mudguards...whatever next.

...but if you have a choice of riding a bike with or without mudguards, please choose the former on wetter days.

This week's rides, in hopefully, balmy and dry weather are:

A: Malvern - Stuart White (meet at 08:00 for an 08:15 start)
B: Alcester - Phil Elwall
C: Cobhouse Fisheries - Matt Hale

One of the traditional reasons for mudguards was that some cafes aren't keen on muddy wet backsides on their furniture.

I guess it's that time of year for me to do my annual club run lead so I can take the A run this Sunday if nobody else was planning to.
Would anybody be up for a slightly earlier start? Meet at 8, leaving for 8:15? It's properly light by then so no need to worry about lights.
Cheers,

Stu

I honestly don't know why you would opt not to ride without mudguards this time of year :?: Show some respect for the group members around you and also the café owners as Pete said.

Not withstanding the fact, but why cover your bike in crap just for the sake of it?

Thanks, Stu...appreciated.

As always with these things, the club run leader can suggest what he or she wants, and we all decide whether to ride or not depending what is on offer.

As for me, I'm perfectly happy with an occasional 08:15 start and I hope to be there this Sunday, avec guards du mud

..as long as you're not planning a 95-hour blast to Stornoway and back :)

I'll be on my fully guarded Genesis with AA approved tool kit and picnic bag so it'll be a reasonable pace.
Just finalising a route so I'll try and get that up today.

An early start is a good idea (GF in aggro).
If work does not call me in Bristol, probably I will be on the match.
Thanks Stuart

Malvern is the plan for Sunday's A ride. 80+ miles, sensible pace .
I'll try and get the gpx up for you tomorrow.

...any chance we could have a C-run leader this week, and to avoid the weekly game of 'see who breaks first' it would be good if the Oct/Dec thread could also be populated at least once.... A good rule of thumb is you should lead once every ten rides!

This is officially my 100th post on this subject...do I get a trophy?

Is the A run going to stop at Malvern and, if so, where, and roughly what time?

I had a brief search for enthusiasm for 20 minutes sitting at the British Camp kiosk in the 5C rain, but couldn't immediately locate any.

Hi George, we're going to stop at cafe H20 on Fossil bank, just over 40 miles in so I'd say 10:30-11 is a safe bet.
My number is 0792612359 if you want to meet there.

B-run changed to a Beacon Burst / Alcester loop (52 miles from BH) if people want to stop for breakfast in Alcester fine by me or we can carry on. (I don't trust my Garmin on an unfamiliar route atm hence the change)!

Might stop at Cafe Morse tomorrow as a bit more cycle friendly, only a few hundred metres down the way from H2O

Thanks for the info, Stuart. Had a relatively late night and failed to persuade myself that getting up early to go out in the rain was a good idea. Hope I didn't put you to any trouble. Hopefully catch up with you (figuratively) some other time.

No Probs George, it was all good.

Special props to the hardcore half dozen on today's A run, shared work in the wind, on the hills and through the ice rain. A proper honest ride.

Well a C ride with a difference today 😁

After stopping for a fl*t somewhere near Cooksey Green, we carried on to tackle pig hill and get the blood pumping and warm everyone up! The cranks stopped turning at 10:59 and the group observed a minutes silence at 11.

We carried on across the best countryside Worcestershire has to offer (or could have been Flanders... not sure). Just before the café stop, we turned down a farm access/public footpath to be met halfway by an irate landowner. (Route is advertised by Malvern Council, although the landowner didn't have that point of view ) He eventually let us carry on and we were on our way before we had time to find out what was in the back of his Range Rover.

We missed the cut off for the breakfast, but were still served with soup, toast and cakes ready for the return journey.

The forecast tailwind didn't materialise, which made for a tough return journey, but well done to everyone for persevering (especially new rider Dave Hutchings).

On the ride today:

Matthew Hale
Toby Hale
Si Walker
Si Turner
Mark McConkey
Mark Gardner
Gemma Johnson
Simon Woodward
Richard Leaper
Dave Cox
Dave Hutchings

Dave Cole and Derek Reynolds started the ride, but turned off before the stop.

Thanks everyone

Thanks Stuart for leading an epic A-ride.
The weather was strong enough to remind me that "winter is coming" is now "winter is here".

Sorry to Andy, Adam, Jess and you for not saying
Bye but I lost you all 9 km before home.

See you soon :)
