Club runs - 4th February

Post by WorcsPhil » 29 Jan 2018 12:18

Sunday weather was definitely better than Saturday, so hopefully everyone enjoyed the almost-spring like conditions, and who knows, perhaps we even had cyclists in shorts. First of all, can I have the names of people on the A/B run please...I don't like to leave this too long as it easily gets forgotten.

It's AUDAX month, gulp, so can I firstly plead for 3 volunteers who can look after car parks at the Snowdrop/Sunrise audax in 3 weeks time and one person who can spend 15mins seeing people safely out onto the A442 (what a aspirational job, eh?)...not surprisingly all the indoor volunteers were filled in double-quick time, but it would be helpful if we could get a few more. Please post to the separate thread if you can help.

Anyway, we have a Intro ride this week as it's the first Sunday of the month ably led by George, so if you want to venture into this wonderful world of cycling, why not come along for a gentle intro ride to a café not far away...

This week's ride which may or may not get leaders in the week include:

A: Cobhouse - Andy Wrightson
B: Wyre Forest Café - Phil Gameson
C: Lavender Hall Fisheries - Simon Turner

Intro Ride - Chaddesley Corbett, led by George Barker, supported by Dave Cox.

At least the majority of participants are listed here:

Dave Hughes was also on the ride and I was at the café.

I'm happy to support George's Intro Ride on Sunday as long as it is not icy. I think a friend of mine might join us now I've given him an inner tube!

It'll be good to have you along, Dave. I'll put up details soon. Current forecast is for the night before to be cold, but not freezing. Unfortunately, it can be a little colder up on Frankley and the like, so we might have a situation where it's 1 or 2C at the BH, but there is nevertheless frost on the high points. I'll make a definite route decision when we're close enough for the forecast to be reliable.

With the weather forecast currently suggesting that there will be no frost on Saturday night, even on Frankley, I'm assuming that Sunday's Intro Ride can follow the route I have habitually used, which involves a loop through the pretty, hedged lanes of Worcestershire to the garden centre at Caddesley Corbett. It's a total of about 48km (30mi) with a café stop in the middle. The outward leg is longer than the home leg, but the home leg involves a longish climb back over Clent.

The route is intended to be doable for newcomers/returnees to club cycling, yet challenging enough to provide a sense of achievement. We'll wait for everyone on the hills and the average speed (while dependent on level of the group) is likely to be between 10 and 12mph.
- Outward route
- Return route

Feel free to come on any type of bike you like, but if you have a choice remember:
- An MTB is harder work on the road
- You're likely to get pretty mucky without mudguards
- Lightweight tyres can let you down in the winter
It's up to you to make sure that your bike is roadworthy. A few basic tools and a spare inner tube are a good idea. If your bike goes wrong, Dave and I will help if we can, but there's no rescue service. So have a plan for how you might get home in the unlikely event of disaster.

You'll enjoy the ride more if you dress for the weather (cold but not freezing; not very windy; no rain but probably wet roads). Expensive specialist cycling gear isn't necessary, but sensible choices are essential. Over-dressing is every bit as inadvisable as under-dressing. Everyone's different, but I suggest:
- No exposed flesh (face excepted)
- Three top layers: (thermal) vest, warm-but-light long-sleeve top, lightweight wind-proof outer layer that you can peel off and stuff in your pocket if you get too hot
- Close-fitting leggings/tights
- Good gloves
- Thick socks or overshoes, or MTB boots

Although there's a café stop, you'll want a water bottle. A banana or energy bar in your pocket is a good idea too. Bring a little money for the café.

Finally, it's perhaps worth reminding everyone that Intro Rides are intended for people who are new to club/group cycling; they aren't suitable for most novice cyclists. In other words: if you're in the habit of commuting to work by bike, and/or you've regularly been doing spinning classes at a gym, and/or you've recently done a few weekend recreational rides of an hour or more averaging >10mph, you should be fine. But, if you're thinking of dusting off a bike that you haven't ridden for years in order to lose some winter poundage, you might need to do a few independent rides before attempting a Beacon Intro Ride.

The B run route to the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre will be http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Be ... yre-Forest (my usual one).
[The plotted route has an unnecessary trip along the dual carriageway and back between Day House Bank and Belbroughton.]

This is relatively short at 55 miles, but is quite hilly on the way out, so I would not recommend it for people thinking of moving up from the C run.

If there is a small turnout on Sunday and still no leader for the C run then I may change the destination to Charlecote (further but flatter).

I'm sorry to report that I'm not going to be able to lead the Intro Ride tomorrow after all, because I'm going to have to work.

Fortunately Dave Cox has agreed to step in for me, and I hope that I can lead in March or April instead.

Have a great day, everybody!

Yes I'll be leading the Intro Ride. Be good if someone could ride support. I'll choose a suitably modest route tomorrow depending on turnout and weather. Probably Avoncroft or Earlswood area I quite fancy a return to Akamba - I've already been to Chaddersley this week! So Hutch don't worry about hills.

I did well today - we set off with five riders and arrived at the café with six!
Dave Hughes joined us at the top of Day House Bank and Andy McGrath at the bottom of said hill. Dave was intending to leave us before the café, though I am a little uncertain at what point he actually departed.
It was a very clear day and we had some great views to reward our climbing. SheepWalks was a little bit of a challenge, with Dave Hughes showing that his bike handling skills were possibly better than his judgement at one point. Overall though, the roads were in a better state than the last three club runs I have been on.

Once the return leg flattened out a bit we had a pretty strong headwind to contend with and we got rather strung out after Chaddesley Corbett.

On the ride were:
Phil Gameson (leader)
Alistair Hey
Chris Adkcom
Indejit Singh
Andy McGrath
Simon Woodward
Dave Hughes (most of outward leg).
