Club runs - 20th May
Another beautiful day for cycling and 28 riders out on the 2 rides...yes, 2 rides. Thanks to Si for leading again, especially with 20 riders turning up for the C-run, and putting even more pressure on Andy W in the 2-horse race to win the Club run trophy.
Now here's a left field suggestion! Last year we persuaded a group of faster riders to move from riding the B run onto the A-run...this was successful, but it left a hole in that we only have intermittent B-rides this year...so how's about some of the faster, regular C-riders such as Si Walker, Si Turner, Andy Terry, Neil Evanson etc (and I'm sure there are others who ride around 15mph...perfect for B rides!) now riding and leading B-runs. I've ridden with you and you're certainly B-riders!
This should have the advantage of:
- Having B-runs for a change!
- Allowing C-rides to encourage newcomers and riding at 12-14mph.
Whaddye say? No doubt this will mean we have few C-ride volunteers so it's up to you to step up.
Anyway, I get my Monday morning 'notable performers' mentions only from strava and facebook, so apologies if I miss people out, but kudos this week goes to Neil Lynch, for riding and finishing the Fred Whitton sportive (in sunshine!), John Hunt and Laurence Cooley (and probably others) who rode in Beacon colours at the Birmingham Business Park races on Sunday, Gemma Johnson, who continues to break PB after PB on her time trial journey, and broke her PB on a 10-mile TT on Saturday, then only went even better on Sunday...and finally, Jess (again!) and Xav who schlepped all the way up to Glencoe for the RTTC race series, where Jess came third, which gives me an excuse to say 'podiumed' again, and Xav fourth...hearty congrats to all!
This weeks rides, ALL STARTING AT 08:30, are:
A: Wellesbourne - Phil Richards - 08:15 meet for 08:30 start
B: Toddington - Si Walker - 08:15 meet for 08:30 start
C: Meriden/Lavender Hall - Dave Cox - 08:15 meet for 08:30 start
Alternative club run: Staffs away day - Stoke to Llangollen ride organised by Nick Shenton, meet at Trentham Gardens main entrance at 08:15 for 08:30 start
...a perfect week for a C to B move for some riders
Finally, Nick will post details of the alternative club run from Stoke to Llangollen and back again...these are always enjoyable rides organised by the Pied Piper of Iverley himself...why not go along!

Re: Club runs - 20th May
Note that the Meriden run begins at 8.30. There's the option to stop at Lavender Hall for breakfast. Tea/Coffee cake in Village Hall at 12.00
Re: Club runs - 20th May
Thanks to Dave Cox for leading the second C group, who also should have leader points.

I'll take up the challenge and lead a B ride this week.
It will be at the lower end of the B pace approx average 15 mph, to encourage the faster C riders to move up to the B.
The ride will be long at 82 miles but it is fairly flat (10 miles more than this week, for some). The destination is Toddington, either the Flag and Whistle Cafe or for a treat, The Pheasant Inn, where they do great sandwiches and soft drinks or coffee, unless you'd prefer a beer!! It is 45 miles to the rest stop, so I recommend taking some energy food and 2 bottles of fluid and a cafe lock. Weather forecast is currently good (checked on Monday). If you are thinking of going on this one, load up your Garmin or phone so that you have the route as well please.
The route can be found here,
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27502291
Start time will be 8.30.

Re: Club runs - 20th May
Thanks Phil and I shall have a word with our Local MP about the state of the roads in Staffordshire.
This weeks and indeed this years first Alternative club ride is from Stoke to Llangollen.
It’s a 166km long route from Trentham Gardens out via Whitchurch and Ellesmere.
Cafe stop in Llangollen then the return journey via Wrenbury and Keele.
Club run rules apply and we shall be joined by friends from Black Horse Velo for the ride.
Should be a cracking day out and the weather ain’t looking bad either.
Meeeting up at Trentham Gardens at 8am for an 8:30 start. Make sure you park in the part of Trentham Gardens where the garden centre and shops are.
Parking is a plenty and if memory serves me right, free aswell.

Re: Club runs - 20th May
That's great, Si...thanks for taking up the mantle. Mucho appreciato.
As I have to be back home by 2pm (so unfortunately I'll have to miss the Staffs awayday run!!) I'll lead an A-run also leaving at 08:30 unless someone else steps forward by Thursday afternoon. If we all meet at 08:30, that'll be good.
Don't forget, as the daylight is now dominant for a few months, leaving at 08:00 or 08:30 is quite a popular thing to do, and is encouraged so that people can get back home earlier...

Re: Club runs - 20th May
Tempted to do the B ride but worried about not being upto it and slowing everyone down.
Re: Club runs - 20th May
Hello all, if anyone is doing nicks alternative club run sunday and wouldn't mind car sharing could you let me know ASAP on 07933663630, thanks
Re: Club runs - 20th May
Unfortunately, I cannot make Nick's alternative club run as I have to be home at 13:30 this week, so I'll lead an A-ride to Wellesbourne on this route.

For consistency, this will ride will also start at 08:30 (meet at 08:15), 39 miles to the cafe, just 27miles back, so you should be home around 1pm, if that influences your attendance.

Great route for the B run, Si - with a bit of tweaking I could take about 12 new squares with it.

Hi Alberto, the bell is fine...I’m more worried that after your trip to Hawaii, it seems there are huge volcano eruptions wherever you go.

C Run to Meriden Cyclists' Memorial Service
Dave Cox (leading)
Ash Turner
Adrian McHugh
Dave Cole (wreath bearer)
Mark McConkey
Mark Gardner
Dave (Hutch) Hutchings
Dave Little
Oscar Hopkins,
John and Hilary Porter made their own ways to Meriden.
Thanks all for coming along. Lovely "all things bright and beautiful" sort of day, well attended event on Village Green and curious sermon about "honking" but tea and cake at Village Hall meant no bonking!
