Club runs - 1st July
Well, what a sporty weekend that was. England winning in football, cricket and rugby, and the sun promising to shine till November, surely even the worst pessimist should feel alive...
Anyway, Saturday first and two big Beacon events...well done to all those at the Beacon Track Day at Halesowen, and looking forward to reading a summary of the day soon. At the opposite end of the cycling spectrum, Saturday also saw the 'Pushing the Boundaries' club run for 2018. A motley crew of 7 set off at 00:15 on Saturday morning for a 400kms yomp across six counties of the Midlands. Stopping first at Evesham 24hr MacDonald's at 03:20. You get to see a lot of humanity at that time of the morning, and that includes a group of 13 year olds high on something. It was probably wrong to engage the ringleader in conversation who wanted to borrow my bike and 'pull a wheelie, Bruv'. At that point we made our excuses and left. 400kms is a bloody long way, and everyone had low points, but overall the day was fabulous, and six of us finished after Andy Wrightson had to bail at Long Buckby after a crash the day before when a car knocked him into a steel post, but riding 200kms plus with a damaged shoulder was no mean feat. Big thanks to Paul Johnson for organising and his 'quiet' encouragement throughout the day. Paul is contemplating a 24hr 500kms club run for next Summer, so pop that in your mental microwave and see if it defrosts.
Three excellent club runs also ran on Sunday, with two of the three getting back before the footie. Thanks to Neil, Chris and Matt for leading
We're now into July, so be good if we can get the month off to a good start with an Intro leader as well as B and C run leaders this week. See you on Sunday.
This week's rides are:
A: Revills café at Defford - Phil Richards (meet at 08:15, leaving at 08:30)
B: Evesham 'Sham 69' - Si Walker (meet at 08:15, leaving at 08:30)
C: Volunteer required
Intro: Akambas in Solihull - led by Dave Cox

Re: Club runs - 1st July
This week's A-ride will be to Revills Café at Defford, using something like the below route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27901604
I've often cycled past here but never stopped, so unless someone shouts out 'don't go there, it's crap!' that's where we'll go. The route is 125kms so I propose a 08:30 start (meet at 08:15) to ensure we get to the café before breakfast ends, and to ensure getting back to enjoy the afternoon with our loved ones.
It's a nice flat route, so aiming to get everyone back into Brum around 13:30-13:45

Re: Club runs - 1st July
Service is not particularly speedy but the food is good quality. It's the sort of place that would like advanced warning. If busy, there are plenty of items for sale in the shop which can be eaten outside. I've always found the place decent.
Re: Club runs - 1st July
I will lead a Eve 'Sham 69' B ride of 69 miles which will be at a pace of about 15 mph intended for C riders who might wish to move up to a quicker pace and longer distance.
The route will be out via Kings Norton golf club to pass Hilliers at Dunnington and past the farm cafe at Harvington (with an option to stop for a drink), then into Evesham to the planned stop at the Ellendon farm cafe (35 miles). Return via Fladbury, Droitwich and Belbroughton.
There is scope for those wishing to take a shorter route (-10miles) or if it’s too hot to divert at Hillier’s to rejoin the main route at Flyford to get back the Black Horse.
The route can be found here:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27908565
Shorter route
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27916724
Please copy it to your device for navigation.
Meet at 08:15 for a start time of 08:30.
The forecast is for it to be very hot, i recommend two full bottles of fluid and the application of suncream.
(having been out this week for a long ride, these were definitely required!)

Thanks Si,
'Sham 69' - I like it - didn't they have a hit with 'Hurry up, Harry'? Very apt.
Kids - look them up. Punk band as far away from One Direction as it's possible to be

Re: Club runs - 1st July
Perhaps we should have a competition for best musically related named club ride - 'I'll take the A Train' (ride) perhaps?
I'll get my coat!

Intro Ride will be the usual <30 mile potter suitable for people wanting to do a first group ride or returning after a break. Be good to have a support rider please.
Re: Club runs - 1st July
I'll support on the intro ride Dave
Re: Club runs - 1st July
Many thanks Huan that's great
Re: Club runs - 1st July
I have 3 ladies who are all accomplished runners but are nervous about cycling. Trying to encourage them to come on the intro ride. What is the pace of the intro ride?
Re: Club runs - 1st July
What time is the into ride leaving the black horse? It is normal time? I may come along on the intro. My back wheel is in the bike shop, so I’ll be on my commuter/winter bike....
If you’re all about the destination, take a f#€king flight!

...and on the A-ride to Revills farm near Defford were (in alphabetical order)
Chris Ashford
Ben ‘Grimpeur’ Crone
Paul Derbyshire
Paul Johnson
Lawrence of Arabia
Neil Orchard
Phil Richards (leading)
Tessa Sandberg
Ian Simpson
James Tate
George Thorne
Philip ‘second best sprinter in Sussex’ Whiteman
Andy Wrightson
Kevin Young
..with one of the highlights being Paul Johnson being told off by a local after his usual bout of loud swearing whilst cycling through a village.
Quite happy with the service and welcome from the cafe...food was pretty promptly delivered and waitress service in the garden certainly helped. A worthy cafe addition to the rota, I thought.

Re: Club runs - 1st July
Thanks to Phil for leading us on this very hot day. I agree about Defford although it is probably too limited in terms of capacity for winter rides due to the limited space inside.
It was also good see our Beacon Spanish representatives riding as independents to the cafe; Wally and Sue Lowe.
