A, B and C Club runs October, November and December 2019

Post by WorcsPhil » 23 Sep 2019 12:55

...and so, the perpetual hamster wheel of club runs continues into a new season. October sees the start of a new season of club runs, and we're all keen for new ideas and new things to look forward to.

So, after speaking to Pete Norman, an esteemed Beacon member, we'll try an experiment with the C-rides to see if it encourages greater leader commitment. For the first 8 weeks of the new season, I have selected the destinations for C-rides, and the ridewithgps gpx routes for these will be input in a message below. So all the C-riders need to do is post who will lead that week, the route and support are already provided. If you post beforehand that you'll lead then you get the full 3 club run points, surely no higher reward!

If you want to change the destination then you're free to do so, but we'll see how this new approach works, and if good, we'll continue with it, if not, we'll revert to the old way!

A and B riders, you still have carte blanche to lead wherever you want, so post here and in the weekly threads to get your name down.

In short, if you are able to lead a club run or two, please post the date and café destination on this thread. Discussion about individual rides, including rider lists, should be done in a separate thread, which I'll continue to post each Monday.

As per the above message, the routes for the four C-ride locations are as follows:

Hillers - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/9588045
Worcester Country Park - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/10976764
Stourport - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26772661
Lavender Hall - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31169426

These seem to cover a variety of directions, all just about 50 miles and the cafes don't need booking. Pete Norman is more than happy to help out any new leaders, and will provide assistance, and give positive feedback etc to anyone who wishes to volunteer to lead.

Congratulations on the new C run initiative, Phil and Pete.

I was already planning to volunteer to lead a C run on 27 October, and the additional prospect of three clubrun points has me so excited that I feel compelled to dive in immediately. While I'm generally happy to devise my own routes, I can't imagine that I would come up with anything better than the one that is already proposed, so Lavender Hall it is.

I thoought that three points was only allowed for the intro ride. I'm probably about 5 years out of date

I am down to lead the C run on 1 December. However, I see that we currently have no Intro Ride leader for that day. I'm happy to do the Intro instead, if that works out better. I feel it's a great shame if we can't offer potential newcomers a definite planned ride: if they look here or on Facebook or whatever, and see nothing confirmed, it's a big turn-off.

One option might be a combined Intro + C ride. We could all set out together and, if some C runners find the newcomer-friendly pace too slow, they could either carry on beyond the caff to a more distant destination, or come back by a longer route. It's the morning after the Dinner, so some people may be feeling jaded.

Any regular C runners got any strong feelings for or against any of those ideas? Alternative ideas?

Oh, yeah... sorry! Nevertheless, I'm happy to lead whichever works out best (or a combo ride).

Phil, I was wondering: would it be helpful if I were to do a bit of Intro Ride promo and coordination?

I've got no facts and figures to back this up, but my feeling is that we get better attendance on Intro Rides when a definite plan (leader, destination) is in place and publicised well in advance. You've already got your hands full recruiting three times fifty-ish A, B & C leaders. So, I thought, maybe if I took on the job of recruiting twelve Intro leaders per year, and feeding ride details through to Laurence for publication, that that might make your life a bit easier while also hopefully boosting Intro participation.

What do you think? Obviously club runs are your patch, so I only want to do this is you would find it useful.

If I recall correctly, we did used to have someone co-ordinate the intro rides, who wasn't the club runs secretary (I think it was Paul Deane when I joined the club).

I think you're right. Intro Rides were Paul and Debbie's brainchild, if I recall. Nevertheless, I only want to resurrect the idea if it fits in with the current CR Sec's plans.

Hi George,

YES, it would be great if you took over Intro ride promotion and co-ordination...we always struggle to promote it effectively and as we know, new members are then lifeblood of the club etc! You certainly wouldn't be stepping on my toes!

I've been musing on trying to find an effective leader for each of the club runs to help with attendance and support, and it would stop me blathering on to people every week with the same old nonsense. I am happy to do this for the A-ride, although we rarely struggle to get leaders, and having a B-run co-ordinator as well as a C-run co-ordinator...Pete Norman may be a good person for the C-run, but B-run? Anyone fancy this?...terms and scope not yet thought about yet, of course!

Sounds like a good idea, Phil.

Do we usually have an Intro Ride in January, or do we skip that one?
