SOUTH SALOPIAN 200KM AUDAX EVENT - 5th OCTOBER.

Post by Philip Whiteman » 05 Aug 2019 10:54

AN INVITE TO ALL TO ENTER THE BEACON'S NEXT AUDAX ON 5TH OCTOBER.

Start/Finish: Belbroughton
Route: Belbroughton - Tenbury - Bishops Castle - Ironbridge and back to Belbroughton.

No expensive fees, no headline sponsors, no goodie bags, no numbers, no gold standard times, no broom wagons and no pretending at the finish to have looked into the jaws of hell and survived.

We will be sending an army of cyclists over the Dyke into the badlands of The Marches borderlands. Riders will experience the charming countryside of the Teme Valley before swinging northwards through Marches via Hopton Castle to reach the quaint market town and of Bishops Castle. Overall, the route is not too hilly but there is a stiff climb over northern extremity of The Long Mynd, after which life returns comfortable again. After the ruling descent from the Stretton Hills along the Roman Road, you will soon arrive at historic Coalbrookdale and its famous Ironbridge. After a sharp pull out of Coalport, it is a gentle return stage to Belbroughton via Kinver.

The route is considerably gentler than the Kidderminster Killer and does not attract any AUK Altitude Award points.

Riders simply stop at the controls and collect evidence of proof of passages (an ATM, till or café receipt) and answer information questions shown in their brevet card – just to make sure that everyone’s ride can be validated as a true audax at the end of the day. Control points are located in towns where plenty of cafes and shops can be found.

As ever, real ale rewards will be handed out to the lucky cyclist to return in 6th place or at eleventh interval thereafter. Given the location of the route in Shropshire, the selected ales will come from Hobsons of Cleobury Mortimer. Happy quaffing

POTENTIAL FLOOD DIVERSION AT CRESSAGE

Given flood warnings, the low lying passage across the Severn Valley at Cressage may not be possible. An easy alternative is available and will be e-mailed to entrants on Thursday just in case.

Flood Version: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31225854
Official Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28781039

Observers will note that there is a theoretical shorter alternative via Hurley and Wig Wig but this is not advised as it crosses a ford which may also be subject to flooding.

The good news is a forecast of dry weather for most of the day, with only drizzle after 4pm.

Dear South Salopian Audaxer

SOUTH SALOPIAN ROUND-UP

Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback on the route. It will certainly be back sometime in the future.

Perhaps I could say that the highlight was Oakeley Mynd with extra-added attractions provided by a local farmer but I think that I would soon be the recipient of invective. Fortunately, roads were clear and free from flooding.

We had 84 starters, 1 ‘did-not-finish’ and a number of people that chose not to complete their cards for validation. The 71 validate rider’s names will be published by Audax UK later in October or November. Completion times ranged between 16:10 and 21:30 with slower riders having the greatest amount of time to enjoy the countryside.

Next year’s Autumn Audax will see the return of the Autumn Rivers route encompassing Bromyard, Ross-on-Wye and Winchcombe with the start and finish at Belbroughton. When compared to the South Salopian, this route is quite different to the South Salopian in terms of countryside and topography and was positivley received by participants. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17226871
