Ruth Eyles Regains National 100 Mile Time
Trial Crown
Ruth Eyles regained her title as national 100 mile time trial
champion on Sunday.
Representing the Beacon Ruth showed excellent form to complete
the challenging course in 4 hrs 19 mins 03 secs. In other
words, she covered 100 miles of rolling Welsh terrain in blustery
conditions at an average speed of 23.162 mph. This was sufficient
to ensure an advantage of nearly five minutes over Avril Swan
of MI Racing, who secured second place with a time of 4:23:54.
The last time Ruth won this event was in 2005 with a slightly
slower time of 4:20:13. In each of the intervening years,
she has been narrowly edged out of the gold medal position
by Julia Shaw. So this year’s return to the top of the podium
is just reward for Ruth’s unwavering determination.
At the same event, Fenella Brown of the Beacon RCC finished
in 13th position with a time of 5:07:49. In the men’s race,
the club’s Andrew Curley crossed the line in 4:45:31, to take
56th position behind Kevin Dawson of Sportscover.com, who
recorded 3:42:22.
