Success for Colin Edney in the Wolverhampton
Track League
Colin
Edney aka Mr Track as he is known by some in the club due
to his relentless year on year pursuit of club track champ
honours has gone one better and won the ‘B’ senior Wolverhampton
Track League and, in the process took home the trophy for
the highest placed Vet.
Although the track league runs between May and September
it was not until the end of June that Colin first raced and
then it was only as a means to find his ‘track legs’ ahead
of the Beacon’s own Track champs. However, after a successful
first night which saw Colin take a number of hard fought wins
he had the track league bug and was eager for more.
Over the coming weeks Colin began to amass a number of points
thanks to some brave solo efforts and some exciting sprint
wins and suddenly there was a glimmer of a first overall track
league win. However, the current leader Steve Sanders of the
Wolverhampton Wheelers was some way ahead and it was going
to take all of Colin’s experience and ability to overturn
the point’s deficit.
As
the weeks ticked by Colin was becoming a marked man in the
bunch as the Wolverhampton Wheelers riders began to try and
protect their leading man Steve. Yet, a friendly rivalry had
developed between Colin and Steve and some very exciting racing
ensued in a variety of races including scratch, keirin, points,
devil and endurance. Just like two prized boxers Colin and
Steve were exchanging a series of blows but as the rounds
went by it was Colin who was coming out of his corner quicker
and ready for a sprint finish.
The final few weeks of the season saw some competitive racing
across all categories of an excellently run track league and
it was going to be a nail biting finish. However, Colin was
not alone in his quest for glory as he found help in the form
of Adrian Ravenscroft (Birmingham CC) Philip Farley (MJS Racing)
and Peter Hodgetts (Halesowen A&CC) and as the nights drew
in Colin took the overall lead from Steve and firmly had his
sights set on the trophy. Unfortunately for the spectators
and riders the final few meetings of the season were lost
due to rain but this did not dampen Colin’s spirits as he
celebrated a well deserved and hard fought win. This was a
fantastic win for Colin and makes him the first Beacon rider
in a number of years to win a track league and all congratulations
must go to him for an excellent season long performance.
