Dear Beaconites,
Those of you who attended the Beacon Annual Dinner at Kings Norton Golf Club in November last year will remember a small boy being awarded a couple of club trophies, one for cyclocross racing, and one for road racing. Furthermore, some of you will have either been on the ride to Ilam Hall last year, or heard about this, when he rode over 100km up to Derbyshire, finishing with a few challenging climbs at the end, and the following day, rode back home to Birmingham again.
You will be delighted to hear that he continues to race, and has really stepped up this summer. After a slow start, finishing races in the lead group but not having the legs for a sprint finish, he is now competing for the win, and recently, since he crashed out of the earlier Stourport race, has always been in the top 3, beating rivals who were sprinting ahead of him earlier this year.
Unfortunately due to limited numbers of competitive cyclist in the academy, Matthew has chosen to move his primary club, but still has Beacon as his second call.
On Sunday 9th June, Matthew will be racing at Stourport in the West Midlands Youth Closed Circuit Race League. Unusually this is an afternoon event. First race is at 13:30, last race at 16:15. Also I have been given the job of Head Marshal as his club is running the event. If you would like to see Beacon’s brightest young talent (OK, I’m biased) challenge the very best in and beyond the West Midlands region (Cheltenham, Wales, East Midlands, Bedford, etc), then please contact me and volunteer your time (all or part of the event) to stand on the trackside and watch some really fast youngsters go racing.
If you have committed to a certain maximum number of volunteering days a year, or are otherwise limited in the time you can offer, I would prefer that you used that time supporting Beacon events. However if you fancy a day out in Stourport where the sun always shines, then we would love to see you. Usual marshalling benefits apply – free loan of a hi vis waistcoat and red flag, and mug of instant coffee / worryingly weak tea (or maybe more).
