Cyclo Cross Volunteering Opportunities 24th Nov 7th Dec 8th Dec

Post by AdeR » 20 Aug 2024 19:48

Hello All Beaconites.

For the last couple of seasons we have run an absolutely cracking round of the West Midlands League together with our friends in the Stourbridge.

We've had great feedback from participants who described it as 'proper grassroots cross.'

Helpers have been fantastic - the events wouldn't have happened without them. The club makes a bit of money from it too which helps fund activities like the academy.

It would be fair to say that last time out helpers put in some big shifts though. This year it would be really great if more people could step up & sign up to help early doors. That way we can plan & people can work less & potentially race themselves too.

So please put this one in the diary if at all possible. Even if you only have one hour to spare that can give somebody else a well earned break.

24 Nov - collect gear from Lakeside campus at Holt from 3:30 p.m, load it on the van and unload our end.

7th Dec - 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. approx - load kit onto the vans, unload at Walsall & build course.

8th Dec - race day. From 07:30 - 19:00. A big day. Course check, sign on staff, marshalling, course pack up, load on to vans & take to storage. Unload the other end.

I know this is a long way off at the moment - but the earlier we get pledges of help, the better and easier it is for everyone.

Thanks in advance.

Ade

Put me down for helping on the day of the event, Ade.

I may also be able to help loading the van at Holt on 24 Nov. However, I can't make any promises about that, because it's my wife's birthday, and I don't yet know how she'll want to spend the day.

Update. WMCCL 'are delighted to be able to confirm that there will be a twelfth WMCCL event this season. It will be Round 11 promoted by Run And Ride on Sunday 1st December at Hereford Racecourse. The Beacon RC/Stourbridge CC event at Walsall Arboretum on 8th December now becomes Round 12.The event is not yet open for entries. [WMCCL] will tell you when it is.' This means that we do not need volunteers on 24th Nov at Top Barn Thank you to those who offered. I am very much hoping that Run & Ride will be able to arrange delivery of the equipment. I will post updates as soon as I have them.

And back to where we were, Ade, as apparently the hurdles at the Hereford Race Course are too high for cyclo-cross. Or something.

Update. Ok hope you're following! You know I said that we didn't need help on the 24th - well we do! It turns out that at the new event that's just before ours they are going to be using their own kit. That means that the kit that is being used at Top Barn on the 24th will be what we'll be using. So, Worcester Road, Holt WR6 6NH is the place - Time from 15:20 to help take down the course and load it on to a van. Alternatively, if you can help out at Wythall around 17:30 unloading the van that would also be appreciated.

On Saturday 7th we'll be loading at 09:30 from Bell Green Ln, Birmingham B38 0EN.
Watch this space for what three words
That means we arrive with the stuff at  Walsall for 12.
Getting to Bell Green Lane to help load the vans would be a really good way to help for anyone who only has an hour to spare and who isn't available on the Sunday.

Short of three people to marshal Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 10:50 on Sunday. We could still use some extra people to load the van at Wythall on Sat - please sign up if you have an hour spare.

Dear All,

The Cross event is OFF. :!:

The field is currently waterlogged with 4" of standing water in significant sections.

Heavy rain is forecast throughout tomorrow. Given the way the field has not drained previously in similar conditions it is impossible to imagine the course being sufficiently drained and suitable for racing on Sunday. Put it this way, we're not promoting a kayaking competition. The call was made that the longer a decision was delayed the worse the consequences would have been.

Pete (organiser) will contact riders via Rider HQ e mail.

Gary (league secretary) will put out a league facebook post at 18:30. I will do the same on Beacon & Academy.

Please could you help spread the word directly to volunteers.

Please do not put anything on any social media before 18:30.

It is a shame that the event won't be happening as we've had some really good racing in previous editions. I'm convinced though that this is the right call.

Thank you all for your help throughout.

All the best,

Ade

So 100% positive feedback so far on the decision to cancel the cx event. If you have an hour to spare this afternoon & you can get safely to Wythall we'll be loading all the stuff that would have been used for the course on to a van. ETA 13:30. You'll appreciate that the van's progress is weather dependent so please keep an eye on the Beacon facebook. Not a day for racing although I did manage to ride to City Centre and then out to Harborne on my commuter bike. Just and everyday adventure really. Sorry for all those who worked to set it up and the guys hoping to race. Right decision of course.
