C run to Crowle Sunday 13 July
Posted: 11 Jul 2025 18:17
It's going to be very hot on Sunday -- definitely not a day for overdoing it. I will therefore lead an easy-ish C run to Crowle. However, I won't come all the way to the Black Horse; I'll meet you on the way out at Tardebigge.
Start time: meet shortly after 09:00 for 09:15 start
Start location: Black Horse
Destination: Springridge Nursery (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ubiUAeoS7cUQgfxQ6)
Distance: ~73km (~46mi)
Terrain: gently rolling
Speed: 22-23kph (14mph)
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/events/392629-c-run-to-crowle
Meet George: end of Holyoaks Lane 09:45 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/cqPauxKYZYg3DinU8)
Riding in the forecast heat *can* be dangerous. However, in my experience, it *is* dangerous only if you have an underlying health condition or you fail to take appropriate precautions, namely:
- Only join the ride if the advertised distance and speed would normally be well within your capabilities -- the idea is to take it easy, so that we don't overheat.
- Bring lots of fluids and top up at the café.
- Apply and/or bring sun screen, plus something to cover your head, neck and maybe arms.
- Take as many shade breaks as you need and stop immediately if you're feeling odd.
- Have a bail-out plan (e.g. someone you can call for a lift if you're struggling) and don't be too proud to implement it.
That's my personal take on riding in the heat. No one should join me on Sunday unless they share my views on the matter.
