END TO ENDERS

August 1989, by tandem. A direct-ish route, about 900 miles, spread over eight days' riding, with a rest day in the middle. Left LE in a heatwave, arrived JoG wearing three jerseys and wishing I'd taken tights with me. Had the time of my life, nothing but cycling, eating and drinking every day. Started half the days with a hangover.
Oh, yes ... also met my future wife in a pub half way.
After the E-to-E, when I told the other member of the tandem crew that I was moving to Holland and why, his response was, "Did we meet some Dutch girls in Keswick?"

This summer I cycled a double end to end.
Despite being involved in a crash on the third day that was no fault of my own and left with some nasty injuries including deep cuts and bruises (which I still bear the marks some five months later) a few chipped teeth and one tooth broken in half, blurred vision, a killer headache that lasted two weeks and of course a broken wrist I still managed to cycle a further 1800 miles. On reaching John O’Groats I decided to make it tougher by coming back the long way over the Cairngorms, Northumberland coast and the Pennines
.
Well over two thousand miles in twenty six days (the toughest thing I have ever done in my life)
So does that count as two?

August 2010, myself, Philip Whiteman, Richard Greer and Trevor Richards rode it in 8 days.
Statistics for the 8 days: -
923 miles
66,478 feet of ascending
Average speed – 13.3 mph
Time in saddle – 69 hours, 15 minutes
Would I do it again?
Yes, but certainly not the same route!!!

Without a doubt, you are King of the E2E. And did I here correctly, you would still like to ride it again? Perhaps you could think about riding an ultra-randonee such as the London-Edinburgh-London or PBP.Animal wrote:This summer I cycled a double end to end.

I know a good route that you can have......Fred2637 wrote:I have not ridden the end to end but now have the willingness to do it, so if any other beacon members are thinking of doing this please consider me in your plans.

I may have another blast at this route, assuming I can get in the mood to do it
Saying that, the East to West Mainland extremities route appeals - from Lowestoft to Ardnanmurchan.
I know that I few years ago, Tony Shardlow rode the other E2E, South Foreland to Cape Wrath. One chap has produced a website on this route at http://www.dover2capewrath.moonfruit.com/# . In my view, the alternative E2E looks far more attractive as a route. The major stumblic block is the reliance on the bucket of a ferry at Durness.
Far to much to do... ... none of this fits into my plans for the next two years.

I'd love to do the end to end, don't think I'm up to it just yet but maybe in the next 18 months as I improve.Fred2637 wrote:I have not ridden the end to end but now have the willingness to do it, so if any other beacon members are thinking of doing this please consider me in your plans.

Did the Deloitte Ride Across Britain in 2010. Completed "End to End" distance but unfortunately had to miss one stage with a sickness bug.
Doing it again this year (8-16 September), raising money for ParalympicsGB, the organisation suporting Britain's elite paralympic athletes. Link to fundraising page below for anyone interested.
