How do you judge your own performances in these events, Andy, given that they are all different? By your position in the field? Are fields broadly comparable? Is half way about par for the course for you, or does it represent an improvement?

I tend to think that above half way is a good result. If that doesn't work, I go for above half way in my age group.

Mostly what happens is you just compare times to people you know, or to your previous times in the same event. On that basis it was I good day because I beat a bloke I used to work with, and his son. And I did a better time than another friend did last year. Plus I wasn't overtaken on the bike, and I caught a few in front of me.

It's worth adding that if you have a bad result, there are many more sources for potential excuses - the 3 legs of the race plus 2 transitions for a start.

Impossible to judge performance in one triathlon except if you finished and enjoyed it you were fantastic! Essentially a Tri is 3 time trials over courses that can differ enormously. The only way is to race regularly and look at the other athletes ahead of and behind you. I find it's good to enter a few of the same ones each year as benchmarks.
