Please note, if you have downloaded the GPS file, given that there will be some ice around tomorrow morning the route I will follow will be significantly different, particularly the early parts, to use some more reliable roads.

Dave, in Belgium, which possible has the most road racing of all countries, other than major races rolling road closures on open roads are only 15 minutes or so ahead of the race, whilst in towns and on climbs it's usually an hour or so. The differences in geometry between a CX bike and a Road bike are small. There seems to be two Beacon places on Facebook, a group and a page. I am not sure why this is but I see group posts automatically but page posts only occasionally. Pretty sure alu rims had taken over from steel on mid to high end bikes by the 90's. Certainly the one bike I have had from virtually new since 1987 (built in 1986) came with alu rimmed wheels and it's a touring bike so time trial bikes certainly would.

I think you hit it right on the nail here Dave. The riders respond to the level set by officials. In six day racing, for instance, the rules on physical contact are much more leniently interpreted but straying from the line is punished. Riders expect to be DQ for straying from the line and 9/10 time...
