I've never heard of Cyclingtips, Laurence, so there must be some other explanation for my confusion, e.g. stupidity or an inclination to jump to unsubstantiated conclusions. Yes, I assume that what you say about the photos is indeed the case, but that's why I suggested that they could easily have us...

I'm confident that the majority of members of this board would be happy for Froomey regardless of the gender of his spouse. But it was indeed a curious choice of picture. Presumably they simply hadn't got a wedding photo ... but surely they could have got an agency snap of Froomey and his girlfriend...

Does anyone know about baggage transfer plans? Andy, I saw John at the café on Sunday, and he was asking for bags to be brought to the Social Club on Thursday. I don't who's taking them or whether that person still has capacity available, but I'm sure John can provide details. (My own baggage trans...

Like Tim and others, I have always felt that his associations with known dopers and the downturn in his form just when many of his associates were getting their collars felt by WADA looked a little too coincidental. And like Pete, I always found his moaning and generally sour public demeanour unende...

Alan, didn't you ask this same question a while back? I personally never use those stainless steel crimp-it-yourself brackets, for precisely the reasons you describe. I almost always drill and cable tie. I've never understood why manufacturers persist with crimp-it-yourself brackets, when they are s...

Nick, thanks for the tip, but I only positioned the link there for the photo. Most of my efforts were concentrated on trying to close it by hand, with no stress on the chain at all. I felt that if I needed to force it closed by pedalling, something had to be wrong, since in the past I've had no trou...

A different tool is required for fitting. I've never had a problem fitting, just removal recently. To fit, squeeze the plates together a bit while pulling the links apart. Once they're partially engaged, stand on a pedal with the brakes on and "click". Yes, I know about the two tools, Steve ... I w...

This is ironic! Just before James posted, I was struggling to fit one of those little KMC missing link buggers to a new chain before eventually giving up and deciding that I'd have to buy a tool. If only I'd given up a bit sooner, I might have beaten Laurence to it! I can confirm what Steve says. I'...

Cheers, all. The few pairs I've bought over the years haven't all been cheapo shades. Also, I have tried on other people's big-brand glasses, and haven't been encouraged to believe that they would suit me better. Unfortunately, proper experimentation is hard, even with modest-priced glasses: I'm not...

Am I a freak?
At this time of year, I get a lot of flies and dust in my eyes. So, every few years, I think to myself, "you really ought to be like everyone else and get yourself some shades." I do so, and quickly find that the glasses are more trouble than the flies and the dust. The bottoms of the lenses invaria...

It's years since I looked into it, Alan, but last time I did I came to the conclusion you have: insurance away from the house doesn't make financial sense. In your case, you've got to have a £1200 bike stolen once every three years to break even. Unless you're doing some very high-risk stuff, it's m...

The story of a 5,500 mile tricycle ride from south London to the far south of Egypt and back (posted by George on behalf of former Beacon member Howard Boyd). A couple of years ago, I signed up for Zoho Creator, which is free for up to a certain number of apps. I used it to set up a contact info database, which any family member can consult and update using a predefined form. I have it embedded in a page in the private area of our webspace, where the curr...

The café map & info on the club website is gradually getting out of date. Several of the cafés that we now use aren't on, and some of the contact info is missing/out of date. It's unreasonable and impractical to expect Steve to keep abreast of every addition to our collective knowledge of local café...
