Club TT 30 May Wednesday 9.0 K36/4.5C Starts 19.00

Well that was a great turn out last week. Good to see so many new faces as well as old ones returning to time trials.
Lets see if we can go even better this week.
Go on it's only £3 give it a go!

If anyone could also bring any signs Flourecent Jackets or Flags that would also help if we could also have an extra helper to possibly start the last few riders as it was very tight last week 2 more riders we would of had to refuse them entry

Is there a limit on the number of riders, or just don't like starting them after the first rider has finished?

Could always just set people off at 30 or 45 sec intervals instead if it gets a bit crowded...

There is not really a limit for riders but the timekeeper cannot be at the start and finish at the same time so if rider 1 gets to the finish before the last rider starts his time cannot be recorded and additional is required to start riders if we have many more than 20.We are not really allowed to start at less than 1 minute intervals without special circumstances

I'm a no-show tonight. Its tipping down here and I don't fancy riding for an hour to the course in heavy rain...annoying. Why do I get the feeling that it will be really nice again in about an hour though... :?

That was some really badly timed rain. I was hoping to give a TT a go for the first time tonight, but also didn't fancy the ride out in the rain. Of course it was perfectly OK by 7pm. Next time...

WE did put the start back by 10 mins to allow some of the standing water to clear still a couple of big puddles but ok and still a good turnout of 19 riders

5 Gary Lowe 23'01"
6 John Hitchcock 23'09"
7 Nic Vipond 23'16"
8 Gary Mackintosh 23'29"
9 Andrew Burley 23'35"
10 Brian Botfield 23'42"
11 Ian Taylor 24'45"
12 Richard Kings 25'12"
12 Carl Woodfield 25'12" Cult Racing
14 K James 25'24" (BRAT)

16 Richard Leaper 25'56"
17 Jamie Tubs 26'24" (Private)
18 Pat McCabe 27'46"
19 Bob Green 30'07"

Well done again Steve. Some real hot competition on what could have been a dreadful night had the rain come half an hour later. Many riders were drenched to the skin as they started but spirits were not dampened.
And how neat of Richard and Gary to tie for 12th spot, thus removing the need for someone to come 13th.

See you all next week for the last in the current series at the Triangle.

See while you guys were busy riding I was busy using the (apparently) performance spec air intake to suck up as much water into my engine as possible to clear the roads for you... happily the AA chap managed to clear it all and get me started again. :P

We'll meet again!

Big thanks to marshalls and timekeepers, another great club event and really nice atmosphere.
Steve, awsome well done - hats off.

Special congrats to Matt for a superb time on standard road bike in only his second ever time trial.

 That was the fun bit.

Actually, when I arrived at the start I did have that sensation you get as a poor swimmer when you get a bit too much water up the nose.

Great event, first time I've done a time trial and first 'competitive' outing on a bike of any sort for around 25 years. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it and a big thanks to all marshals, time keepers and helpers for turning out in such awful conditions.

I don't think I've ever been as wet as I was when we arrived at the start (wringing my socks out and soaking Pat - apologies sir!) but happily that was all forgotten as we got underway. Some great times posted, well done Steve and respect to all who took part.

Matt, those new wheels were worth every penny!

Thankyou to all the Helpers for actually getting there and doing a great job & well done to all the riders who braved the elements and rode once again some excellent times

Well done to Matt, Nic, Andy and the gang. Some really impressive times last night. Matt should be banned from ever going on a B run in future. PB for Chris as well, can't ask for much better than that.

Sounds like a good evening's racing. Just how fast would Matt be on a TT bike?

As I rode over in the torrential rain I consoled myself with the thought that probably only about 3 nutters would turn up and I could soon go home again........... and when I arrived there was just Brian sheltering in his car and no other signs of life from the few other cars. Then the rain stopped and suddenly 19 riders appeared!

Well done everyone - just goes to show there's no need to let a few drops of rain put you off.

Funny how what on the face of it could have been a terrible evening was brilliant. Well done us I reckon. Looks like Mat will be having to flex his credit card........time trial bike!!!!

Thundery showers are often followed/preceded by brief spells of almost total calm and weird localised air-pressure phenomena. Also, I think I read years ago that moisture in the air works almost like a lubricant, reducing the drag. So, although it can be unpleasant to race in such conditions, you can sometimes go very fast around midsummer downpours.

Also the oxygen content is slightly higher, and rolling resistance from the road is slightly reduced, or at least that's what the internet told me.

So what you are saying George is that there is NO excuse for not going fast?

handicap points

Do we have a simple formula for working out handicap points, perhaps i am being stupid but it does not make much sense to me. Matt Regan had the biggest improvement last night 46 seconds but was only awarded 33 points. Pat McCabe improved by 22 seconds and was awarded 40 points. Nic Vipond improved by 19 secs and was awarded 36 points etc. I know it is only a bit of fun but could somebody explain.

I think Matt's is an error - looks like he should be 1st. Pat McCabe's looks OK - I think he may have got a bonus for his age group as did Bob Green. But I'm only making an educated guess in both cases!

Oh, no, Ed. There's always an excuse for not going fast. I know lots and lots. You've clearly been looking for them hard enough, which explains a great deal.

What I am saying is that there's often (but by no means always) an opportunity to go fast in the period around a midsummer downpour ... which seems counter-intuitive until you've experienced it a couple of times.

Having checked the spreadsheet I think 0.4 should come off Matt's time to convert it from a decimal to minutes and seconds.

Something like this?

Code: Select all

Matt Regan 23.00 3.46 19.14 40
Pat McCabe 27.46 8.08 0.17 19.21 39
Chris Hudson 21.58 2.32 19.26 38
Richard Kings 25.12 5.43 19.29 37
Andrew Burley 23.35 3.58 19.37 36
Nicholas Vipond 23.16 3.35 19.41 35
Gary Lowe 23.01 3.18 19.43 34
Richard Leaper 25.56 6.12 19.44 33
Bob Green 30.07 9.51 0.18 19.58 32
Steve Bull 21.10 1.06 20.04 31
John Hitchcock 23.09 3.01 20.08 30
Ian Taylor 24.45 4.30 20.15 29
Brian Botfield 23.42 3.19 20.23 28
Gary Mackintosh 23.29 2.37 20.52 27
Phil Gameson 25.34 4.30 21.04 26
I'm afraid that moves you down a space or 2 Steve B, if I'm right.

Sorry for taking apart your spreadsheet Steve S (if indeed it is yours); give me a spreadsheet to play with and I'm a nightmare!

Two questions, just how old do you think I am and what are the age categories ?

Posted: 31 May 2012 22:57
by Simon Dighton
Apologies, particularly to Matt - another 40 seconds should come off your handicap time which makes you 1st on handicap for last night. Will re-issue later this weekend. Pat M - I have you down as over 60 but not sure of my sources. The age categories are U18, 18 - 60 and over 60. Let me know if I have you in the wrong category. Thanks for the comments and looked like a good night and a great turnout. Best Simon

It may be poss that the results were not fully updated after the regular events on the course which would give the error all results are based on your PB for the course if you have 1, age related results can sometimes be missed if we do not have a riders age which can usually be found on the signing on sheet

Latest results have been included - just a mistake on Matt's on converting decimal points into seconds. Will reissue this weekend with adjustment for the much much younger Pat than records suggest!

Reissued handicap results

Posted: 03 Jun 2012 18:21

All now completed and a change on Gary Macintosh as he did have a time last year which means a different handicap. Therefore Gary M takes full honours for this week followed by Matt. Pat's 17 age seconds fall away. Updated full results will be on the normal link although overall standings have very little change. Here is hoping the rain goes away.
