Social Activities

Beacon RCC has a varied social programme, which includes weekly club nights, an annual dinner and occasional events organised on an ad hoc basis. Details of forthcoming events are published in our calendar and in the club’s e-mail news Bulletin.

Weekly club nights

Every Thursday evening at 9pm, club members who want to have a drink and a chat meet at the Rednal Social Club, Barnt Green Road [map]. The social club has a security door, so you can't simply walk in. However, if you press the buzzer and say you are with the Beacon, you'll be allowed in.

Several times a year, special 'themed' club nights are organised. These may involve showing a cycling-related film, a presentation or talk on anything from sports psychology to touring in far-flung places, a quiz, or some other form of entertainment.

Annual Dinner-Dance & Prize Presentation

The dinner-dance is the centrepiece of the Beacon's social programme. Its format is quite formal, but the atmosphere is very lively and easygoing. The dinner-dance is normally held on the last Saturday in November to celebrate the people who have won club trophies in the preceding season. It involves a three-course meal with cross-toasting, speeches by club members and an entertaining guest speaker, a prize presentation and a disco (during which non-dancing members congregate in the bar!).

Occasional special events

Beacon members get together throughout the year for events that don't follow a regular pattern, but are organised to suit the level of interest. Past get-togethers have included barbeques, balti outings, carvery meals, skittles evenings, weekends away (hotel or bunkhouse accommodation, travelling on two or four wheels, or even two feet!)

"Beacon Boots" country walks

Some Beacon members like walking nearly as much as cycling! Like-minded souls get together for not-too-strenuous rambles through the countryside, which usually involve a pub meal. Many of these get-togethers are held on Bank Holidays or during the Christmas-New Year period.

Christmas Carols at a local pub

A week or so before Christmas every year, cyclists from several midlands clubs converge on a local pub for a seasonal get-together: a unique, unmissable event with a very special atmosphere.
