The Montgomery Madness - Route

The 208km route follows quiet B roads and lanes with only short sections of A road taking in Bewdley, Bromyard, Ludlow, Knighton, Montgomery and Bridgnorth. This challenging route includes approximately 3,450m of climbing and crosses the Kerry Ridgeway, White Grit, Stiperstones, Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge amongst others. There are spectacular views of the Stretton Hills, Worcestershire, Salop & Herefordshire.

Start & Finish Points

You may start at Bewdley or at any other control. Riders may also start and finish at Church Stretton though you will need to treat this as an extra control providing supporting evidence of passage for your Brevet Card.

The Climbs

This route is NOT flat and includes around 3,450 metres of climbing. Significant climbs include:

  • Cleobury Hill (leaving Bewdley)
  • Rock
  • Stanford Bank (used by rider Beacon's Little Mountain Time Trial)
  • Mortimer's Forest (soon after Ludlow)
  • Before and after New Invention between Knighton and Clun
  • The long climb up onto The Kerry Ridgeway after Clun
  • White Grit, rarely ridden and little known to many cyclists
  • Stiperstones
  • The Long Mynd
  • Wenlock Edge at Longville
  • Up-down; up-down; up-down; up-down between Bridgnorth and Bewdley

Check your brakes

Some descents are steep and winding. Riders should be particularly careful when from Long Mynd towards Church Stretton. The road is exposed to one side, winds and possesses a cattle grid part way down the steep descent.

Road Conditions

Some of the unclassified lanes may be covered by grime during winter. Sections to watch out for include:

  • Tenbury to Ludlow
  • Between the B4539 and Knighton (the direct A4113 is a cleaner alternative)
  • Clun and over the Kerry Ridgeway
  • The Long Mynd and Stiperstones can be ice-bound in mid-winter
