The Montgomery Madness - Route
The 208km route follows quiet B roads and lanes with only
short sections of A road taking in Bewdley, Bromyard, Ludlow,
Knighton, Montgomery and Bridgnorth. This challenging route
includes approximately 3,450m of climbing and crosses the
Kerry Ridgeway, White Grit, Stiperstones, Long Mynd and Wenlock
Edge amongst others. There are spectacular views of the Stretton
Hills, Worcestershire, Salop & Herefordshire.
Start & Finish Points
You
may start at Bewdley or at any other control. Riders may also
start and finish at Church Stretton though you will need to
treat this as an extra control providing supporting evidence
of passage for your Brevet Card.

The Climbs
This route is NOT flat and includes around 3,450 metres of
climbing. Significant climbs include:
Cleobury Hill (leaving Bewdley)
- Rock
- Stanford Bank (used by rider Beacon's Little Mountain
Time Trial)
- Mortimer's Forest (soon after Ludlow)
- Before and after New Invention between Knighton and Clun
- The long climb up onto The Kerry Ridgeway after Clun
- White Grit, rarely ridden and little known to many cyclists
- Stiperstones
- The Long Mynd
- Wenlock Edge at Longville
- Up-down; up-down; up-down; up-down between Bridgnorth
and Bewdley
Check your brakes
Some descents are steep and winding. Riders should be particularly
careful when from Long Mynd towards Church Stretton. The road
is exposed to one side, winds and possesses a cattle grid
part way down the steep descent.
Road Conditions
Some of the unclassified lanes may be covered by grime during
winter. Sections to watch out for include:
- Tenbury to Ludlow
- Between the B4539 and Knighton (the direct A4113 is a
cleaner alternative)
- Clun and over the Kerry Ridgeway
- The Long Mynd and Stiperstones can be ice-bound in mid-winter
