Beacon Roads Cycling Club

The Academy was launched in 2015 and is the youth section of Beacon RCC that provides cycling coaching for children aged 5 and upwards who are able to ride a bike without stabilisers. The emphasis is on fun and improving bike handling skills and confidence and ability to ride and race safely around others. Members learn lots of skills including cornering, braking, riding close to others, racing, dismounting, pedalling and how to use gears.

Whilst it's all about fun some children choose to race representing the club from under 8s age in the West Midlands Circuit, West Midlands Cyclocross League, British School Cycling Association races, and the Halesowen Friday Night Track League and all the necessary skills for these are covered in the coaching sessions. All abilities, girls and boys and all ages from five upwards are welcome at the coaching sessions.

All of our coaches have British Cycling Coaching qualifications and have full CRB clearance and are first aid trained and we have a , Dave Cox.

The sessions take place fortnightly on Tuesday evenings on the playing fields at Rowheath Pavilion in Bournville 6.20-7.30pm. We normally run ten or eleven sessions across spring and summer from April to September, dates are on the Beacon Cycling Academy Facebook and our Message Board pages from January. There may be one or two additional sessions during 2016 at other cycling facilities in the West Midlands (to be confirmed).

A well functioning bike and helmet is all that is required and the child needs to be a paid up youth member (£10) and a parental consent form needs to be completed too. There is no cost to the coaching, it is included in membership so it works out at less than £1 per session.

Safeguarding & Welfare

In line with most sports clubs we have a welfare officer, currently David Cox, who has been on the Sports Partnership Safeguarding and Protecting Children training. Any concerns re safeguarding, child protection or protection of vulnerable people can be referred to David in the first instance via a direct message on the message board, or by phone using a number published in the membership pack.
